Accordingly, banks will stop accepting passports as identification documents for all payment transactions. Under the new regulations, people are required to use chip-based citizen identification cards, ID cards, or level 2 electronic ID cards to authenticate their identities when making transactions.
According to the State Bank of Vietnam , the tightening of the identification process aims to ensure accuracy, strengthen fraud prevention, counterfeiting and standardize data throughout the banking system. The new regulation also terminates the validity of Circular No. 48/2018/TT-NHNN regulating savings deposits between credit institutions and depositors, a document that previously allowed the use of valid passports to withdraw savings, check balances or verify information at the counter.
