In recent days, the incident of 24-year-old male student Au Nhat Huy being admitted to the doctorate program in medicine at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine has caused a stir in public opinion.

Possessing an excellent medical degree is a necessary condition for candidate Au Nhat Huy to pursue a doctorate at the age of 24 (Photo: TTU).
According to Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, candidate Au Nhat Huy is qualified to be admitted to the doctoral program at the school according to regulations. In addition to the requirements of research experience and foreign language, this candidate meets the requirements for a degree to study for a doctorate in medicine, which is to graduate from a university in medicine with honors or higher.
According to the profile, candidate Au Nhat Huy graduated with honors in Medicine from Tan Tao University with a GPA of 3.8/4.0; TOEIC certificate of 940/990.
Thus, an excellent university degree is an important condition for candidate Au Nhat Huy to be able to study for a doctorate at the age of 24, just over a month after graduating from university.
Looking at recent years' data, it can be seen that obtaining a good or excellent medical degree, which has long been difficult, is now very common at many private universities.
Students with excellent degrees in medicine account for a very high percentage at private schools participating in health training, even though the entrance standard scores are still modest.
As at Tan Tao University, during the graduation ceremony last August (when candidate Au Nhat Huy received his diploma), the school awarded diplomas to new bachelors and new doctors from 5 faculties including Economics and Business Administration, Biotechnology, Information Technology, Languages, and Medicine.
In this batch, 27% of students achieved excellent results, 35% of students achieved good results and 38% of students achieved fair results. There was not a single student who graduated with a grade below fair.

Up to 62% of students were classified as excellent and good in the graduation ceremony last August of Tan Tao University (Photo: TTU).
Previously, in the graduation ceremony for 62 graduates in September 2024 of Tan Tao University in the above 5 majors, there were 14 excellent graduates (accounting for 22.6%), 24 excellent graduates (accounting for 38.7%), and 24 good graduates (accounting for 38.7%).
Not only at Tan Tao University, the percentage of excellent and good graduates of health training programs also accounts for a high proportion at some other private schools.
At the most recent graduation ceremony of Phan Chau Trinh University last July for 60 new doctors and bachelors of Nursing and Laboratory Technology, about 7% of the students graduated with honors, 30% were good, 60% were fair and about more than 2% of the students graduated with average grades.
At Duy Tan University, in the 2023-2024 school year, the number of students majoring in VI (including Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Dentistry) graduating with honors accounted for 5.08%, with good grades accounted for 21.95%, and with good grades accounted for 62.69%.
During the graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Dentistry at the School of Medicine, Duy Tan University at the end of 2024, there were 14 students with excellent grades (23%) and 37 students with good grades (62%) out of a total of 60 graduates. Only 9 students graduating from the Faculty of Dentistry at this university were ranked below excellent.
On the contrary, at many long-standing traditional medical training schools with high entrance scores such as Hanoi Medical University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, University of Health Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University)... every year there are almost no excellent graduates, the percentage of good students is very modest, from 5 to less than 20%.
This not only causes a paradox in medical training where the higher the input standard, the lower the output and where the lower the input, the higher the output.
A degree may not determine ability, but in some cases, such as for a doctorate, a good or excellent degree is an advantage.
