Workers, activists and other workers across Asia took to the streets on May 1, International Workers' Day, calling for better working conditions and greater rights.
In the Philippine capital Manila, hundreds of workers and labor activists braved the heat to demand higher wages and job security amid soaring food and oil prices. Riot police blocked the marchers from approaching the Presidential Palace.

On the same day, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet celebrated International Workers’ Day on May 1 with over 1,000 workers at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port in southwestern Preah Sihanouk province. He called for harmony between workers and employers to build a cooperative atmosphere in the workplace, affirming that the government will continue to pay attention to promoting the rights and protecting the interests of all workers nationwide.
In the South Korean capital Seoul, thousands of protesters waved flags and chanted slogans in support of workers. The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, which organized the protest, said it planned similar rallies at more than 10 locations across the country on May 1. Thousands of Seoul police were mobilized to maintain order.
In the Greek capital Athens, workers took to the streets to demand pay rises to offset the rising cost of living. Meanwhile, public transport workers went on strike on the day, disrupting bus and metro services in the capital.
