Thought to be bleeding after miscarriage, turned out to be uterine cancer

Hanoi: A 47-year-old woman had abnormal bleeding after a miscarriage, thought to be due to a retained placenta, and was diagnosed with late-stage cervical cancer.

On June 28, Dr. Nguyen Duy Anh, Director of Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, said that the patient had been examined at the provincial hospital and was diagnosed with bleeding due to retained placenta. Unsure, she went to Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital for examination, where doctors discovered that her cervix was ulcerated.

In addition, the ultrasound image showed a corner pregnancy - a form of ectopic pregnancy due to an abnormal location of the fetus. If not detected and treated promptly, the fetus can rupture, causing massive bleeding in the abdomen, endangering life.

The team diagnosed the woman with late-stage cancer, treated the remaining blood and ectopic pregnancy, then transferred the patient to the oncology department.

Early stage cervical cancer has no obvious signs. This is a malignant disease, ranking fourth in women and second in women of reproductive age after breast cancer. According to Globocan statistics, the incidence of cervical cancer in Vietnam in 2020 was 6.6 per 100,000 women, accounting for 2.3% of the total cancer rate. The mortality rate is 3.4 per 100,000 people.

The main cause of the disease is HPV infection. Other risk factors include early sexual intercourse, having multiple sexual partners, having a partner infected with HPV, and immunodeficiency...

Current treatment methods depend on the stage, type of cancer, patient's age, general condition and the patient's desire to preserve fertility. The main regimens are hysterectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Doctors recommend that women should get vaccinated against HPV early, combined with screening and regular gynecological examinations every 6 months to detect the disease at an early stage.
