In the video , the elderly man is seen sitting and eating and drinking with his friends.
But what horrified many people was that the man pulled out a syringe and inserted a glass of wine into a tube to deliver the alcohol directly to his stomach.
The video has attracted over 600,000 views and hundreds of comments. Most people believe the man was already ill but didn't take care of his health, continuing to drink alcohol recklessly.
Sharing his thoughts on this case, Dr. Doan Du Manh, a member of the Vietnam Vascular Society, said that according to the video footage, the man had his esophagus cut and his stomach opened.
"This means the doctors opened the patient's abdomen and inserted a tube directly into the stomach to pump in food and drink," Dr. Manh explained.
According to this expert, gastrostomy is typically indicated for patients with tumors in the mouth, throat, neck, chest, or esophagus.
When tumors form in these areas, they can compress, narrow, or completely block the passage of food to the stomach.
Therefore, a gastrostomy will be performed to deliver food directly into the stomach, helping to improve the patient's condition.
Additionally, gastrostomy is also used for patients with burns or esophageal strictures, pneumonia, or complications from prolonged nasogastric tube placement.
Or patients with poor nutrition or head injuries, or neurological disorders.
Through gastrostomy, patients receive better nutritional support to recover their health and sustain life.
"When alcohol goes directly into the stomach, it will have the same effect as drinking alcohol through the esophagus as usual," Dr. Manh said.
According to experts, when consuming alcohol, it is absorbed through the stomach lining. If the stomach is empty (drinking on an empty stomach), the alcohol goes directly into the bloodstream.
When the stomach contains food, especially protein-rich food, the rate of alcohol absorption slows down but does not stop.
Regularly drinking alcohol on an empty stomach can cause inflammation, ulcers, and bleeding in the stomach.
Twenty percent of alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream through the stomach, and the remaining 80% is absorbed through the small intestine.
Once in the bloodstream, alcohol is transported throughout the body, dilating blood vessels, bringing a greater flow of blood to the surface of the skin (resulting in flushed face and limbs), a feeling of warmth, and lowering blood pressure.
When alcohol reaches the brain, it affects the nervous system, the ability to control behavior, and bodily functions. This effect depends on the level of alcohol concentration in the blood, leading to different states: euphoria, agitation, and loss of behavioral control.
At the same time, alcohol is also a depressant that slows down brain activity and impairs the ability to walk, communicate, and think.
Approximately 5-10% of alcohol is excreted through the lungs, kidneys, and skin; the remaining 90-95% is transported to the liver for processing.
