Tuyen Quang: Promoting the development of large timber plantation

Việt NamViệt Nam10/12/2024

In order to realize the goal of building Tuyen Quang into a typical province in sustainable forestry economic development, in recent times, the province has implemented many appropriate policies and mechanisms, including the policy of developing large timber forests. By effectively implementing this policy, the income of forest growers in the province has been gradually improved.

With a total area of nearly 24,500 hectares of FSC-certified forest, Yen Son district is the locality with the largest FSC forest area in Tuyen Quang province. Mr. Le Quang Toan, Vice Chairman of Yen Son District People's Committee, said that the area of FSC-certified forest is also one of the favorable conditions for the locality to develop large-scale timber plantation. Currently, each hectare of forest planted according to FSC standards brings in 15-20% higher income than conventional forest planting and the health of forest planters is also guaranteed because they do not have to use chemical pesticides. Along with promoting sustainable forest planting, the district has stepped up propaganda and mobilization work for people to plant large-scale timber forests to take advantage of and increase the economic value of forests.

Households in Yen Son district take care of their large timber forests.

After being informed and realizing the economic benefits of large timber plantations, Mr. Nguyen Duc Binh's family, village 2, Thai Binh commune, Yen Son district, boldly registered to convert more than 4 hectares of acacia trees of his family to large timber plantations with an exploitation cycle of 10 to 12 years. Currently, these acacia trees are nearly 9 years old. From this stage, the trees almost do not need to be cared for. From the 10th to 12th year, the volume of wood can reach 120 - 150 m3/ha. With the current market price, the income will be about 200 - 220 million VND/ha, double that of acacia trees 7 to 8 years old.

In order to improve the productivity and quality of planted forest timber for processing and export, recently, the National Agricultural Extension Center has coordinated with the Forestry University to organize a model of intensive large-scale timber plantation in the direction of sustainable forest management for processing and export in Trung Son and Dao Vien communes, Yen Son district. This model is currently being implemented on an area of over 40 hectares with the participation of 11 households. The tree species planted is tissue-hybrid acacia, suitable for local soil.

Staff from the Forestry University inspect the growth process of plants in the intensive large-scale timber plantation model towards sustainable forest management for processing and export.

The family of Ms. Dinh Thi Nhi, Trung Son commune, participated in the model with an area of 3.2 hectares. Her family received more than 5,800 seedlings and more than 1,000 kg of NPK fertilizer. Ms. Nhi said that the acacia variety of the model is a tissue-hybrid acacia variety recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. After nearly 2 years of planting, Ms. Nhi's acacia garden has grown quite well, with an average root diameter of 6-7cm and an average height of 6-7m.

According to Ms. Nhi, when participating in the model, households like hers are trained in knowledge about planting and caring for acacia trees in conjunction with environmental protection, without using herbicides so that the forest can develop sustainably and meet export standards to Europe.

Mr. Nguyen Doan Hung, Deputy Head of the Department of Cultivation and Forestry, National Agricultural Extension Center, assessed that the model of intensive large-scale timber plantation in the direction of sustainable forest management for processing and export in Trung Son and Dao Vien communes, Yen Son district has achieved very high efficiency. In particular, forest growers have changed old farming practices and developed the economy from forest plantation more effectively. With forest growers applying well the instructed techniques and taking care of the trees according to the correct process, when harvesting in the 9th and 10th years, the density of trees will be ensured, the volume of wood will increase to achieve the highest economic efficiency for people planting large-scale timber forests.

In order to develop large timber plantations, the province has recently had many policies to support the conversion of small timber plantations into large timber plantations; support high-quality forestry seedlings for forest planting, and strengthen the nursery system applying high technology in seed production to proactively meet the demand for forest seedlings. Up to now, the province has had 81,000 hectares of large timber plantations, ensuring raw materials for wood processing facilities in the area.

The province has strengthened the nursery system applying high technology in seed production to proactively meet the demand for forest seedlings.

Mr. Trieu Dang Khoa, Deputy Director of the Forest Protection Department of Tuyen Quang province, said that in the coming time, to increase the value of planted forest wood in the area, the province will continue to implement forestry development investment policies such as supporting the conversion of small timber plantations to large timber; supporting forestry seedlings for forest planting; effectively implementing models through projects, scientific topics as well as large timber plantation development models; promoting borrowing capital to convert small timber forests to large timber according to Resolution 03 of the Provincial People's Council with an interest rate support of 50%.

At the same time, continue to train human resources, invest in infrastructure, technical equipment and facilities to promote the capacity to master tissue culture technology; introduce hybrid acacia varieties produced by tissue culture into mass afforestation of forests producing raw materials for the wood processing industry; focus on developing production forests in the direction of transforming the structure of forestry varieties and silvicultural techniques to meet the standards of large timber forests; implement intensive forest cultivation measures and gradually apply mechanization in the stages of planting, caring for and exploiting planted forests.../.
