The feature, which will roll out in May, will allow users who don't "sign up for a monthly subscription… but want to read occasional articles," billionaire boss Musk tweeted.
On Friday, Musk said Twitter would cut content subscription fees by 10 percent after the first year, noting that the company would not take a cut for the first 12 months. Those subscriptions include long-form text and hours of video .
Since taking over the social media company in October, Musk has made a number of rapid changes to its products and organization. The company rolled out its Twitter Blue verification service as a paid service and laid off about 80% of its staff.
Musk has been making changes to boost revenue at Twitter after the social media platform saw advertising revenue decline last year, just as he bought the social network for $44 billion.
Twitter is also planning to charge developers at least $42,000 a month for access to its data streams, Wired reports. Below that, there’s just a basic free tier and a “tester” tier, which offers access to very limited data and costs $100.
The high fees have prompted some companies like Microsoft and Intercom to stop using Twitter in their social media management tools. On Friday, Air France tweeted: “Due to Twitter changing its terms and conditions, our customer service via direct messaging on this network is no longer available.”
