USD exchange rate today in the world

The dollar rose to a three-week high against the safe-haven yen and also rose against the Swiss franc amid easing tensions in the Middle East after Iran backed continuing talks with Europe over its conflict with Israel.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Tehran supports further dialogue with Germany, France, Britain and the European Union and is prepared to meet again in the near future after discussions in Geneva.

Israel and Iran have been engaged in an air war for the past week as the Israeli government seeks to stop Tehran’s nuclear program. Markets are worried about the possibility of a US attack on Iran, which has sent the dollar soaring.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major currencies including the Swiss franc, Japanese yen and euro, is on track to gain 0.6% this week, but it held steady after a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors said a rate cut should be considered as early as July, based on recent inflation data.

Iran said Friday it would not discuss the future of its nuclear program while it is under attack from Israel, despite European efforts to bring Tehran back to the negotiating table. Meanwhile, the White House said President Donald Trump would decide within two weeks on whether the United States should enter the conflict, easing investor fears of an imminent U.S. strike on Iran.

Brent crude fell more than 2%, but at around $77 a barrel, it remains near the peak set in January.

The decline supported currencies of oil-importing economies such as the euro and yen. The euro rose 0.3% to 1.1534 against the dollar, while the yen fell 0.29% to 145.88 against the dollar.

The recent rise in oil prices has made the inflation outlook more uncertain for central banks around the world, which are already grappling with the potential impact of US tariffs on their economies.

The Swiss franc held steady at $0.8166, but was on track for its biggest weekly decline since the third week of April after the Swiss National Bank cut interest rates to zero. However, investors were surprised by a 25 basis point rate cut by the Norwegian Central Bank, sending the Norwegian krone down more than 2% against the dollar this week.

While geopolitical tensions dominated the market this week, concerns about a trade war and its impact on costs, corporate profits and overall growth have remained ever-present as the Trump-imposed July deadline for tariffs approaches. Those concerns have weighed on the dollar, which has fallen about 9% this year.

The pound held steady at $1.3471, paring earlier gains after UK retail sales data showed output fell by the most since December 2023.
