USD/JPY exchange rate today 5/20/2025

The USD/JPY pair is hovering in a technically and policy-sensitive zone, as the US dollar weakens and investment sentiment favors the Japanese yen amid a converging set of supportive factors.

According to UOB Group's foreign exchange experts, the key support level of 144.50 is now seen as unlikely to be broken in the short term, although the USD could slip slightly below the 144.90 level.

Analysts Quek Ser Leang and Peter Chia said that the USD is currently in a narrow range consolidation phase, and the fluctuation range is likely to continue to maintain in the 144.50 to 147.30 range in the coming time. This is the area where the market can witness USD/JPY bounces if there is no policy breakthrough from the Bank of Japan (BoJ) or the Fed.

The yen has been the best-performing currency among the G10 over the past week, according to Rabobank, as expectations mount that Japan may gradually tighten monetary policy as inflation persists, with the BoJ showing signs of leaning more hawkish.

In addition, information from Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Kato, who will hold talks with US Treasury Secretary Bessent this week, is being closely watched by the market. Expectations of US-Japan FX talks also contributed to investors returning to long JPY positions.

Although USD/JPY is expected to fluctuate around 145 in the short term (1 - 3 months), experts still maintain their bearish view towards the 140 region in the next 12 months.

This is based on the assumption that the BoJ will cautiously tighten monetary policy, and that the US will not be too aggressive in opposing the JPY's appreciation if it is moderate.

However, it should also be noted that Japan's first-quarter GDP data was weaker than expected, showing the economy contracted for the first time in a year, a factor that puts BoJ policymakers in a difficult position, especially when balancing growth stability and controlling inflation amid global uncertainty.
