U.20 Vietnam lost ticket to U.20 Asia final round

The 0-1 defeat to U.20 Syria in the final match of Group A of the 2025 AFC U.20 Championship qualifiers at Lach Tray Stadium (evening of September 29) left U.20 Vietnam with no right to decide in the race for a ticket to the next round.

Coach Hua Hien Vinh and his team dropped to second place in the table, having to compete on points and goal difference with 9 other second-placed teams to qualify for the next round. If they are in the top 5 second-placed teams (10 second-placed teams in total), U.20 Vietnam will qualify for the final round.

However, the results of the remaining matches taking place on the evening of September 29 and early morning of September 30 did not support Nguyen Cong Phuong and his teammates.

Initially, U.20 Vietnam ranked third in the ranking of runners-up teams, just behind U.20 Yemen and U.20 Thailand. Then, U.20 Kyrgyzstan held on to draw with U.20 Japan in the final match of Group I to gain 7 points, 6 more than U.20 Vietnam (after the two teams deducted the result with the bottom team). That made U.20 Vietnam drop to fourth place.

Then, U.20 Qatar surprisingly won 3-2 against U.20 Jordan in the final match of the JU20 group. Jordan dropped to second place. With the same 6 points as U.20 Vietnam in the second place ranking, U.20 Jordan ranked higher due to a better goal difference (+8 compared to +6).

At this time, U.20 Vietnam fell to fifth place on the second place ranking and had to wait for the match between U.20 Australia and U.20 Saudi Arabia to have a win or loss to secure their ticket to the next round. However, that did not happen. The two teams drew 0-0, meaning U.20 Australia had 7 points, pushing U.20 Vietnam out of the top 5 best second place teams.

Two unfavorable results at the same time caused U.20 Vietnam to miss out on a ticket to the final round.

U.20 Vietnam officially lost the ticket to the 2025 AFC U.20 Championship finals after 7 consecutive qualifying rounds. Looking at the rankings, there is a bit of regret for coach Hua Hien Vinh and his team, because if they had 1 point against U.20 Syria, U.20 Vietnam would have definitely advanced.

However, failure despite having all the advantages in hand is an inexcusable pain for U.20 Vietnam.

This is also a warning bell for the next generation of Vietnamese football. U.19 Vietnam was eliminated in the group stage of U.19 Southeast Asia and now also lost the ticket to the Asian finals. Where will the future of this generation of players go?
