Italy will have to compete for a World Cup ticket through a risky play-off round.

The European World Cup qualifying is reaching its final stages, bringing with it all the important decisions about who will make it to the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and who will stay home. Among those teams hanging in the balance is Italy.

The Blues let Norway overtake them to take the top spot in the group. That means Gennaro Gattuso's team will have to enter the play-off round to compete for a ticket. Before entering the do-or-die match at the end of March, Italy at least know in advance the names that can be faced in the play-off semi-finals.

According to the current grouping, the "Azzurri" will face one of four teams: Northern Ireland, Sweden Romania, Wales or North Macedonia (depending on the results of the final round of qualifying).

If they make it through the semi-finals, Italy will advance to the play-off final, where they will face one of the teams that advanced from the unseeded bracket, along with Türkiye, Ukraine and Poland.

Currently, potential opponents in the play-off final include Scotland, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Albania, Iceland, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Kosovo.

According to Calciomercato , the final could be held in Rome or at the opponent's stadium, depending on the draw results and UEFA regulations.

The European play-off round is organized with 16 teams divided into 4 groups, competing in a semi-final and final format to select the 4 teams that win the final spot to the World Cup.
