On May 29, at the headquarters of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), the draw ceremony for the 2026 AFC U23 qualifying round took place.
Accordingly, the U23 Vietnam team is in Group C with opponents Bangladesh, Singapore and Yemen. Notably, Singapore and Yemen are "familiar friends" who were opponents of the U23 Vietnam team in the 2024 U23 Asian qualifiers at Viet Tri Stadium, 2 years ago. That year, the U23 Vietnam team got a ticket to continue with the top spot in Group C (won Yemen, Guam, tied with Singapore).
Overall, this group stage is considered easy for the red team. Before participating in the tournament, U23 Vietnam "warmed up" at the 2025 AFC U23 Championship, taking place in July in Indonesia.
Today (May 29), 26 players of the U22 Vietnam team gathered in Hanoi to prepare for the upcoming tournaments. Because Head Coach Kim Sang Sik is busy with the National Team, Coach Dinh Hong Vinh will continue to be the one in charge of the team. It is likely that when the tournament officially takes place, Mr. Kim will return to the role of Head Coach of U23 Vietnam.
In the 2026 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers, the 11 group winners and the four best runners-up will advance to the Finals, to be held in Saudi Arabia in 2026. The host team of the Finals will be automatically granted entry without having to go through the qualifying round.
