The Kalashnikov Group—once led by legendary Soviet weapons designer Mikhail Kalashnikov, best known for inventing the AK-47 assault rifle—has recently unveiled an upgraded version of its Kvazimachta reconnaissance drone. Photo: @Kalashnikov.

Unlike other drones that can only operate for a few hours, this upgraded Kvazimachta reconnaissance drone is said to be able to stay in the air for 500 hours straight. Photo: @Kalashnikov.

Leonid Rokeakh, director of exports of autonomous drones and ammunition at the Kalashnikov Concern, told TASS that, unlike conventional battery-powered drones, the Kvazimachta drone is connected via a fiber-optic cable that not only provides continuous power, but also serves as a real-time data transmission channel, avoiding radio interference or wireless connection failures, preventing electromagnetic interference, which is a potential vulnerability in wireless transmission that can be exploited by the enemy. This configuration is especially beneficial in complex environments where communication can be difficult. Photo: @Kalashnikov.

Fiber optic cables also ensure better data transmission, which is important for real-time reconnaissance missions in environments where wireless connections can be compromised. Photo: @Kalashnikov.

Extending the cable length to 200 meters, as was done in the Kvazimachta reconnaissance drone upgrade, is said to provide greater operational flexibility. Photo: @Kalashnikov.

It allows the drone to operate at higher altitudes or farther distances from the control station while still receiving a continuous stream of power and data. Photo: @Kalashnikov.

The Kvazimachta reconnaissance drone, powered by fiber optics, is being used in special operations in Ukraine, providing continuous aerial surveillance to protect the surrounding area and location. Data is transmitted in real time to ground terminals, which provide 24/7 optical and infrared surveillance. Photo: @Kalashnikov.

The platform can also be adapted for civilian purposes, including security monitoring at crowded events, said Leonid Rokeakh, Kalashnikov's director of exports of drones and self-propelled ammunition. Photo: @Kalashnikov.

Both Russia and Ukraine are increasingly using fiber-optic drones in their ongoing war in Ukraine. However, in addition to the distance limitation, fiber optic cables can add weight, affecting the payload capacity of drones. Kiev has increased production of fiber-optic drones, but one problem is the purchase of fiber optic cables, which are difficult to produce. China is now one of the world's largest producers and exporters of fiber optic cables. Photo: @Kalashnikov.

However, the technology to produce this fiber optic cable is already available in the US and Mexico, as well as Japan, Italy and India. Therefore, fiber optic cables could play an important role on the future battlefield as another strategic resource. Photo: @Kalashnikov.
