Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Bui Xuan Cuong has just assigned the Department of Finance to urgently preside over and coordinate with relevant departments, branches and units to consider the proposal of Vingroup Corporation on researching and investing in a sea route connecting the Can Gio area and Ba Ria - Vung Tau (old).

Consulting and proposing to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee must be completed before October 10, 2025.

If the sea route is developed, the travel time from Can Gio to Vung Tau will only take 10 minutes.

Previously, Vingroup Corporation sent a document to the Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, requesting permission for the company to research and invest in a sea route connecting Can Gio and Ba Ria - Vung Tau (old) under the BT (build - transfer) form.

In the document, Vingroup Corporation stated that on June 11, the Prime Minister issued Decision 1125/QD-TTg approving the "Project to adjust the master plan of Ho Chi Minh City to 2040, with a vision to 2060", identifying the development of modern transport infrastructure and improving intra-regional and inter-regional connectivity as key strategic directions.

After Ba Ria - Vung Tau province merged into Ho Chi Minh City, the need to develop a direct connection axis between coastal areas became urgent.

According to Vingroup, investing in the sea route will shorten travel time, effectively connect functional areas in the city, and at the same time create momentum for economic, social, and commercial development and expand sustainable urban space.

Can Gio is about 15 km from Vung Tau via Ganh Rai Bay. Currently, the shortest way to travel between these two areas is by ferry, operating from 6am to 10pm every day, with a fare of 70,000 VND per trip.

Currently, Vingroup is building the Can Gio coastal urban area with an area of 2,870 hectares, with a population of nearly 230,000 people. In addition, this group also proposed to invest in a metro line connecting Can Gio with the center of Ho Chi Minh City.
