Drones have played a central role in the Russia-Ukraine war, now in its 20th month, used in large numbers by both sides for reconnaissance and attack. Kiev has focused on increasing production but has relied heavily on foreign-made drone engines.

Faced with depleting Western arsenals as the war drags on, Ukraine wants to increase its own production of various military equipment and ammunition to ensure stable and faster supplies.
Ukrainian officials hope cooperation with Western arms manufacturers could also help revive the domestic arms industry and give the economy a boost.
Industry Minister Oleksandr Kamyshin said he had recently seen a “new wave of interest” in his country from Western defense industry companies. Ukraine announced on Tuesday that it had registered a joint venture with German arms maker Rheinmetall.
“It is a positive wave, it shows more interest and I am sure that interest will lead us to new joint ventures, new production facilities locally,” said Minister Kamyshin.
