On October 15, at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational , Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, the 222nd session of the UNESCO Executive Board unanimously approved Vietnam's initiative to propose that the United Nations consider announcing the "International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development" as soon as possible, prioritizing the 2027-2036 period.
Ambassador Nguyen Thi Van Anh, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to UNESCO, introduced the initiative. The overarching aim of the initiative is to promote the crucial role of culture in serving sustainable development in countries and contributing to responding to the complex challenges of our time to ensure a safe and prosperous future for all.
According to regulations, this proposal still needs to be submitted to the UNESCO General Assembly (November 2025) and the United Nations General Assembly for consideration and approval (expected in 2026), but the approval of this proposal by Vietnam at the UNESCO Executive Board is an important first step towards the announcement of the establishment of the International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development - an initiative bearing the Vietnamese mark at the global level.
Vietnam's proposal of this initiative is a concrete step to contribute to implementing the Party and State's guidelines and policies on international integration in the new situation, reviving and developing Vietnamese culture in the new era, promoting and elevating multilateral diplomacy, cultural diplomacy and foreign culture.
This is an important contribution of Vietnam to promoting the mission, goals and role of UNESCO, especially in the cultural field, and at the same time demonstrates Vietnam's proactive, positive and responsible spirit as a member of the UNESCO Executive Board for the 2021-2025 term, which is highly appreciated by many countries and UNESCO leaders. /.
