Yen is a diligent student with many outstanding achievements such as: Excellent student for many consecutive years, Bronze medal in Provincial History Olympiad (2023-2024 school year), Third prize in Provincial Excellent Student History (2024-2025 school year). She always aspires to dream of studying History at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education. Because that is where she finds the love of learning, can inspire and impart knowledge to the next generation and is the path she believes can help her escape poverty.
The poor female student still studies hard every day, despite her worries, not knowing if she will be able to continue her studies after this exam.
This year’s graduation exam will be an opportunity, but also the boundary between dreams and reality. But up to this point, Yen’s exam preparation is full of worries. Because she was born into one of the poorest families in Phuoc Binh neighborhood, Tan Xuan ward (Dong Xoai city). Even the temporary house built more than 20 years ago is still made of unplastered bricks, the leaky corrugated iron sheets have not been replaced, and on rainy and stormy days, the house is as damp as the yard.
Certificates of merit, medals, and awards are proof of Yen's efforts to study, overcome hunger, fatigue, etc. to nurture her dream of knowledge.
Yen's father, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Truong (born in 1970), has hip osteoarthritis and has been bedridden for 3 years. Thanks to persistent treatment, he can now walk with a limp but must take regular medication. To ease the burden on his family, Mr. Truong sells 30-50 lottery tickets around the neighborhood every day.
After school, Yen is busy making a living, from hourly housework to working as a waitress at a cafe, but she has never complained about hardship, never surrendered to fate.
My mother, Mrs. Phan Thi Thanh (born in 1973), despite having degenerative spine disease and varicose veins, still has to shoulder the role of economic pillar, with a hard job as a construction worker. Unfortunately, her poor health makes it difficult to find a job, sometimes there is work, sometimes there is not, income is unstable.
Yen also has an older brother who, due to poverty, had to drop out of the University of Fine Arts and is looking for a job. The second brother has just joined the army and the younger brother is about to enter 10th grade. “Seeing our daughter studying well but having to temporarily put her dream of going to university aside, my wife and I feel so sorry, but we don’t know what to do. Her health is exhausted, her income is only enough for the minimum living expenses, and there is no relative we can borrow money from to help her continue her studies,” Mr. Truong said sadly.
Yen's university path is also her family's only hope of escaping poverty.
Pitying the poor but studious student, the teachers at the school also cared for him and helped him reduce his tuition fees. The local authorities also considered supporting him in the “Godmother” program. However, the amount was small, only helping a little with daily living expenses.
The university journey ahead is too much of a burden for her family. After stressful exam preparation hours, Yen still has to run around looking for all kinds of jobs such as cleaning houses, helping out at restaurants, etc.
I hope that the philanthropists will not forget her - a green shoot of knowledge who is nurturing hope in adversity. "I don't ask for much, I just ask to continue studying, I ask that my dream of teaching is not left behind, that it is not the end!" - Yen's words mingled with tears of self-pity.
