Among the children who received free eye examinations and surgeries under the “For Children’s Eyes” program is little La Thi Nhu Y (born in 2015, Cham ethnic, Phu Mo commune). Y’s eyes were congenitally crossed due to genetics inherited from her father. At school, she was teased by her friends, which made her feel inferior. Due to her poor family background, Y had little opportunity to receive treatment to improve her eyesight.
Fortunately, during a community eye examination organized by Phu Yen Eye Hospital in early April 2025 in Phu Mo commune, her illness was discovered. FHF Fund gave her the opportunity to have surgery and return to normal life.

MSc. Dr. Nguyen Thi Bang Sam, Deputy Head of the Department of General Treatment (Phu Yen Eye Hospital) said: “Striatum causes the two eyes to not look in the same direction. If not operated on, the more strabismus will lead to amblyopia, gradually reducing vision, not only affecting aesthetics. Realizing the condition and circumstances of Y, we quickly consulted and decided to treat the child with surgery.”
"I have been with the program "For the eyes of children" of Phu Yen Eye Hospital since the very beginning, nearly 20 years ago, as an expert and personal advisor to the hospital's team of doctors and surgeons. This is a large and most meaningful program that Phu Yen Eye Hospital carries out every year" - Associate Professor, Doctor, Doctor , former Deputy Director of the Training and Guidance Center, Central Eye Hospital. |
When picking up his child from the operating room, Mr. La Lan Lam, father of little Như Ý, could not hold back his tears - tears of happiness. “When my child was born, his eyes were not like other children's, I was very sad. Luckily, thanks to the program "For the eyes of children", my child received free surgery. At Phu Yen Eye Hospital, father and child received the attention of doctors, the hospital took care of every trip, meal, and sleep. Hopefully, many children who are unfortunate enough to have eye defects, especially those in difficult circumstances, will have the opportunity to be treated like my child,” Mr. Lam expressed.
Nhu Y is one of 25 children with congenital strabismus, ptosis, and entropion who were screened and operated on by doctors at Phu Yen Eye Hospital.
The surgery was performed by two surgeons: Associate Professor, Dr. Ha Huy Tai, a leading expert with over 40 years of experience, former Deputy Director of the Training and Guidance Center, Central Eye Hospital and MSc. Dr. Nguyen Thi Bang Sam, a PHACO surgeon with 20,000 successful surgeries, Deputy Head of the Department of General Treatment, Phu Yen Eye Hospital.
Of the 25 surgeries, 19 were for strabismus, 3 were for ptosis, and 3 were for congenital entropion. FHF funded the surgery costs in the project “Improving the comprehensive eye care model 2023 - 2026”.
The program “For the Eyes of Children” was initiated and sponsored by FHF since 2000; then it was implemented annually by Phu Yen Eye Hospital. During the period 2011 - 2022, the program was organized with the hospital's budget. From 2023, FHF implemented a new project and continued to accompany Phu Yen Eye Hospital in this program until now.
