Why did the University of Commerce adjust its admission method, including History and Geography in the admission process?

In 2025 enrollment, the University of Commerce has many new points, adjusting some admission methods and admission combinations to comply with the new enrollment regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, in accordance with the graduation exam according to the 2018 General Education Program.

Talking to reporters of the People's Representative Newspaper, Deputy Head of the Communications and Admissions Department of the University of Commerce Nguyen Quang Trung said that in 2025, the enrollment plan of the University of Commerce is basically quite stable compared to previous years.

However, this year, the school has completely abandoned the admission method based on academic records for students studying at national key specialized high schools. Previously, the school reserved 5% for this method.

Admission methods combining international language certificates with academic results are only for international career-oriented programs, advanced programs, and international dual degree programs. For all other training programs, especially standard training programs, candidates will have to apply by converting foreign language certificates with high school graduation exam results of 2 subjects.

In addition, other methods of the school include considering entirely based on high school graduation exam results, considering based on capacity assessment results (ĐGNL), thinking assessment (ĐGTD), considering a combination of high school graduation exam results with students who won excellent student awards at the provincial and city levels (from 3rd prize or higher) will be given extra points.

Add many new admission combinations

- Could you tell us more specifically about the new admission points for 2025 of the school?

For the certificate combination method, combining the certificate with the exam score will consider all majors. As for the certificate combination method with the learning results, it will only consider majors that have slightly higher foreign language proficiency requirements. These are the international career orientation program and the advanced program, the international dual degree program.

Regarding the admission combinations, the school has added admission combinations corresponding to the optional exam subjects of 2025, creating maximum conditions for candidates - all students who study and take graduation exams in high school can apply for admission to the University of Commerce.

The school added new admission combinations such as: Math - Economic and Legal Education - English, Math - Information Technology - English, Math - Technology - English, Math - History, Geography - English. These are new combinations parallel to the school's previous traditional combinations, this year there are additional combinations corresponding to the 2025 high school graduation exam.

Regarding new professions, with the development and requirements as well as the context of digital transformation, the school has adjusted the training programs and enhanced and added more international career-oriented training programs. These programs are more practical, helping students gain interdisciplinary professional knowledge and better foreign language skills, thereby helping them to be more competitive after graduation and have better career opportunities.

Last year, the school successfully recruited 8 international vocational training programs and this year added 7 programs, a total of 15 international vocational training programs. In addition, there is an international dual degree program, meaning students are awarded 2 degrees: one from the University of Commerce and one from a foreign partner. Thus, students will have 2 degrees after 4 years of study.

Advanced program – a program positioned as the best program of the University of Commerce includes selected and selected courses, updated knowledge including the team of experts, of which about 5,6 courses will be studied entirely by a team of senior experts abroad.

For the advanced program, the international dual degree program, students study 100% in English. Therefore, when enrolling, students must also have foreign language skills to study these programs very well.

- Why did the school include Geography and History in the admission exam groups this year?

In fact, in terms of professional knowledge and the school's input thinking capacity, these admission combinations all include Math and Foreign Language, which are two subjects that can be said to be the core, focusing on knowledge, thinking, and pillars of the school when selecting students at the entrance. Therefore, Math and English, regardless of any other subject related to the 2025 high school graduation exam, students are all capable and have enough basic knowledge to study well in the programs of the University of Commerce.

Therefore, the school's Admissions Council decided to include these admission combinations to facilitate students, because many students can choose the corresponding elective subjects according to the new regulations (2018 General Education Program) and to ensure that any student has the opportunity to be admitted to the School.

The difference in benchmark scores between the combinations is not large.

- With this year's admission regulations, how will the conversion of scores for the groups and the school's admission methods change to ensure fairness for candidates?

In fact, the Ministry of Education and Training has issued a draft to guide schools in converting scores. Most schools are also in the process of calculating and collecting information data to ensure that the conversion of scores is fair. The University of Commerce has also compiled statistics on the academic results of students admitted by different methods in the past 3 years, and calculated to see whether the difference between the admission methods and the school's benchmark scores in previous years was fair or not.

Accordingly, the results of these admission combinations are mostly relatively fair and students with foreign language certificates are slightly better, for example: students with international foreign language certificates combined with high school graduation exam scores and high school academic results have slightly better academic results.

Therefore, for the University of Commerce, the issue of converting scores is not really difficult. Because our focus is not on the entire transcript, but on the transcript combined with certificates; on the transcript combined with high school graduation exam results, so the level of influence between the combinations is almost not large, not much influence.

There is only the admission method based on the results of the National High School Graduation Exam of Hanoi National University and the results of the National High School Graduation Exam of Hanoi University of Science and Technology. We have to wait for the data of the exam organizers to be announced, as well as how they convert the scores. We may have to wait until we rely on the results of the high school graduation exam to determine the level of difference.

In the previous year, the school could set the threshold for the high school graduation exam at 26 points or less, but this year, the high school graduation exam may have higher differentiation and the high school graduation exam score will be lower (for example, returning to 23.24 points). In that case, the school will use the 30-point scale to ensure fairness for students participating in the test and high school graduation exam.

Every year, after the high school graduation results are available, the school will announce the admission threshold results. This year may be different, depending on the announced high school graduation exam score range, at which time the school will announce the threshold score and determine how much this year compared to previous years, for example: 26 points in 2023, 2024 corresponds to how many points in 2025 and it may not be 26 points but lower, because this year's exam is expected to have a higher differentiation. Therefore, the school has to wait until that time and the school has almost all other methods clear, converting points is not difficult.

Schools all have many quotas for considering high school graduation exam scores.

- Currently, there are many testing methods such as thinking assessment and ability assessment, so should candidates take both of these methods for admission? What advice do you have for candidates taking the university entrance exam this year?

Obviously, when you consider this exam, you will partly orient yourself to the schools. In my experience, you should look at previous years, how much the school devoted to the admission of these exams.

For example, every year, the University of Science and Technology has a lot of quotas for the Thinking Assessment. So you can consider that if you apply to the University of Science and Technology, you should take the Thinking Assessment; or Hanoi National University and most of its member schools have a lot of quotas for the Ability Assessment. If you apply to these schools, you should consider your choice.

As for other schools, you should look at the quotas of previous years before applying, this year the schools will have similar quotas. The more admission methods you have, the greater your chances are, but if you take too many exams, it will be a waste of time, because when you focus on one exam, the chances of another exam will be less. So you should consider carefully with the exams.

I still highly appreciate the high school graduation exam - a relatively important exam because the majority of schools still reserve the largest quota for high school graduation results. According to the enrollment statistics report of the Ministry of Education and Training, in 2024, about 60% of students will be admitted to university based on high school graduation results, the remaining methods will account for 40%. Therefore, students should focus more on the high school graduation exam.

Tuition fees at the University of Commerce increase according to the roadmap. Every year, the school announces detailed tuition fees in the enrollment plan. For example, this year, tuition fees for the standard program are from 26-28 million/year (4-year course); the international career orientation program is 38.5 million/year; the international dual degree program is about 185 million/year, the advanced program is over 200 million/year.
