The 55.22-carat ruby is set to become the largest and rarest ruby ever auctioned in June, and is expected to surpass the previous record of $30.3 million held by the Sunrise Ruby.
The ruby is expected to be auctioned in June in New York, less than a year after it was discovered in a diamond mine in Mozambique.
It is the rarest and most valuable ruby ever to come to market. Named Estrela de Fura (“Fura Star” in Portuguese), the ruby is expected to fetch $30.3 million, Sotheby’s said.
Besides diamonds, rubies are also considered one of the rarest and most valuable gemstones in the world .
The ruby originally weighed 101 carats in its rough form, twice as much as it does today.
The current auction record is held by the Sunrise Ruby, a 25.59-carat ruby found in Myanmar that fetched $30.3 million in Geneva, Switzerland in 2015.
The Estrela de Fura was extracted from a rough rock by miners in July last year. It originally weighed 101 carats, nearly double its current size, making it the largest ruby ever discovered.
The world's largest and rarest ruby will be auctioned in New York next June.
The giant stone is cut into smaller symmetrical shapes and polished, processes that remove impurities and enhance the ruby's color and brilliance.
A ruby of this size and quality is almost unprecedented. Deep red in colour and of exceptional clarity, the ruby has the traditional red colour of highly sought-after Burmese rubies.
