Recently, the British Fashion Council (BFC) Fashion Awards 2025 honored Anok Yai in the most important category for a model: Model of the Year.

Anok Yai is considered the "black pearl" of the international modeling industry. She possesses both a perfect face and body (Photo: Instagram character).
This victory did not surprise the fashion world because over the past 12 months, Anok has appeared on runways and in global advertising campaigns, becoming one of the most sought-after models.
However, what makes her special is not only the title, but also the journey of turning a "rough gem" into a new beauty icon of the era.
Anok Yai was born in 1997 in Cairo (Egypt), in a family of South Sudanese origin, and grew up in New Hampshire (USA).
Her story of entering the profession has the color of the social media age. Specifically, in 2017, a photographer accidentally took a photo of Anok at the Homecoming festival at Howard University. The photo went viral and became famous on the Internet overnight.
It was not a staged photo, no elaborate makeup, no forced pose, but a moment that fully expressed the "heaven-given" aura of a free-spirited and radiant 20-year-old girl.

Just four months later, Anok made history by becoming the first black model to open a Prada show since Naomi Campbell.
Her powerful walk on the Prada runway not only transformed her from an internet sensation to an international face, but also marked a milestone in the fashion community, where the concept of beauty standards began to shift more strongly. Since that moment, Anok's career has been on a steady rise.
In 2025, she is almost fully booked on the world's biggest catwalks. Anok opens and closes shows for a series of brands such as: Saint Laurent, Fendi, Chanel, Ferragamo, Hugo Boss, Coperni, Ralph Lauren.
Not only stopping at the runway, she is also the campaign face of powerful fashion houses such as Versace, Mugler, and appears frequently on the covers of famous magazines such as Vogue France, Allure, Perfect Magazine.
Her next iconic moment was the 2024 Met Gala red carpet, where Anok appeared in a skin-tight jumpsuit studded with 98,000 Swarovski crystals.
In the sea of lights and fierce competition of Met Gala, Anok stands out as a contemporary monument, not pursuing ostentation but conquering with her own charisma.

However, Anok’s journey has not always been bright. In the years before her honor, she had a time when her name was not mentioned in major nominations, even openly expressing her disappointment with the inconsistency of the fashion industry.
But instead of stopping, Anok turned every setback into a launching pad. She focused on the sustainability of her career, choosing the right runways, collaborating with visionary brands, and expanding her voice in conversations about diversity, inclusion, and representation in fashion.
Speaking after receiving the Model of the Year 2025 award, Anok said: “This honor is not just about me. It is about resilience, community and everyone who has seen themselves in my journey.”
The saying immediately went viral on social networks.

Many fashion experts analyze that what makes Anok a star is not only her height of 1.78m, her healthy light brown skin, her deep, cold, yet emotional eyes, or her sharp, chiseled jawline. It is the combination of her charisma, her courage, and her own story.
And among the millions of faces that appear every fashion season, Anok is still the name that makes people stop and take a few seconds to look.
