Vietnam calls on the international community to take action to completely eliminate nuclear weapons.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) last week held a High-Level Plenary Debate to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, spoke at the discussion session.

The event took place under the chairmanship of the President of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock. The session had the participation and speeches of many representatives of member countries.

According to a VNA correspondent in New York, in his opening message, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the world is entering a new nuclear arms race; in which the risk from new types of dangerous weapons, the erosion of trust in global norms on the prohibition of nuclear weapons and acts of threatening to use nuclear weapons are at their highest level in decades. Secretary-General Guterres affirmed that disarmament is the foundation of peace and cannot wait for the right "conditions". The UN chief called on nuclear-weapon states to resume dialogue, ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and abide by their commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Speaking at the Discussion Session, Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN, affirmed Vietnam's strong commitment to global efforts on disarmament, preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons and ensuring the rights of all countries to develop and use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. As a member of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), Vietnam always upholds the need to comply with international law and the UN Charter.

Ambassador Do Hung Viet shared the efforts of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in implementing the Treaty on the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ), affirming that Vietnam strongly supports efforts to address the humanitarian and environmental consequences of testing and using nuclear weapons.

As Chair of the 2026 NPT Review Conference, Ambassador Do Hung Viet called on countries to cooperate to strengthen global disarmament and anti-proliferation institutions, demonstrating the highest political responsibility and determination, contributing to the reduction and eventual complete elimination of this type of weapon of mass destruction.

The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (September 26) is commemorated in accordance with Resolution 68/32 of the UN General Assembly in 2013 to raise global awareness of the risks and consequences of testing and using nuclear weapons on the environment and humanity, and to affirm the common determination of the international community in promoting comprehensive nuclear disarmament.
