Vietnam calls for increased international cooperation to combat human trafficking

Vietnam calls on the international community to strongly promote safe and legal migration channels; increase cooperation at all levels, including public-private partnership on the basis of shared responsibility and respect for national sovereignty.

On November 24-26, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the United Nations General Assembly held a High-Level Session to review the implementation of the “Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons” on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the adoption of this document.

Speaking at the opening session, President of the United Nations General Assembly Annalena Baerbock warned that human trafficking is increasing in quantity and sophistication due to digital technology ; emphasizing the need to tighten laws, strictly handle criminals and address the root causes of this problem.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Policy Guy Ryder called on the international community to invest more heavily in victim assistance, strengthen cross-border cooperation and ensure all anti-trafficking policies are “victim-centered.”

Many delegates expressed concern about the increasing number of child victims, the spread of fraud on digital platforms and the increasingly close coordination between organized crime networks.

Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, affirmed that Vietnam considers the prevention of human trafficking a high priority and has recently promoted the completion of the legal framework, including the amendment of the Law on Prevention and Combat of Human Trafficking in 2024. Vietnam has also integrated the content of combating human trafficking into major policies, including the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.

The Vietnamese representative called on the international community to strongly promote safe and legal migration channels; strengthen cooperation at all levels, including public-private partnership on the basis of shared responsibility and respect for national sovereignty ; and prioritize accelerating the signing and ratification of the United Nations Convention on Cybercrime to enhance responses to the growing forms of human trafficking in the digital environment.

Vietnam affirmed that it will continue to cooperate closely with the United Nations, member states and international organizations in joint efforts to protect people and build a safer, fairer and more humane world for all.

Also on November 24, on the sidelines of the High-Level Meeting, Vietnam and 43 countries from many regions around the world jointly issued a "Joint Statement on preventing and combating human trafficking using technology" presented by the Ambassador, Head of the Korean Delegation to the United Nations on behalf of the group.

The joint statement stressed concerns about the rise of human trafficking related to online fraud models, calling for enhanced global cooperation, mobilizing the private sector and United Nations mechanisms to deal more effectively with rapidly evolving forms of crime in the digital environment./.
