Vietnam is very good at 'sowing sadness' for West Asian teams, U.17, let's recreate history!

Against West Asian teams, Vietnamese football representatives are rarely afraid. The biggest shocks that Vietnamese football has had in the history of Asian tournaments are also victories against teams in this region.

"The defeated general" of Vietnamese football

At the time when Vietnamese football for the first time in history had a ticket to attend a FIFA World Cup at all levels, we defeated the representative of West Asian football to do this. That was at the 2016 U.19 Asian Cup. At that time, the U.19 Vietnam team led by coach Hoang Anh Tuan defeated the host U.19 Bahrain in the quarter-finals. Thanks to this victory, U.19 Vietnam won a ticket to the semi-finals of the 2016 U.19 Asian Cup, thereby winning the right to attend the 2017 U.20 World Cup.

Also at the 2016 AFC U-19 Championship, coach Hoang Anh Tuan's team drew 1-1 with UAE and 0-0 with Iraq in the group stage before reaching the quarter-finals. That was the tournament in which Vietnam U-19 was undefeated against West Asian teams, although in theory, any team among the names including UAE, Iraq and Bahrain was rated higher than Vietnam U-19.

Two years after causing a stir at the U.19 Asian Cup, Vietnamese football has caused another shock at the U.23 Asian Cup. On the magical journey to the "Snowy Changzhou" match at the 2018 U.23 Asian Cup, Coach Park Hang-seo's U.23 Vietnam team also created a series of earthquakes against West Asian teams.

Specifically, U.23 Vietnam drew 0-0 with Syria in the group stage, and beat Iraq in the quarter-finals after a penalty shootout, after the two sides tied 3-3 in 120 minutes of regular time and extra time. Then, U.23 Vietnam beat Qatar in the semi-finals after a penalty shootout, after the two sides tied 2-2 in 120 minutes of play. U.23 Vietnam remained undefeated against West Asian teams in the above tournament. For the first time in the history of Vietnamese football, they reached the final of the U.23 Asian tournament.

Achievements associated with the most talented Vietnamese football players

Immediately after that, at the 18th ASIAD in 2018, the Vietnamese Olympic team beat the Bahrain Olympic team 1-0 in the round of 16, and then beat Syria 1-0 in the quarterfinals. We only lost to the UAE Olympic team in the penalty shootout in the bronze medal match, after the two sides drew 1-1 after 90 minutes of official play (the bronze medal match had no extra time). This was the first time in the history of Vietnamese football that they reached the semi-finals of the men's football event at an ASIAD.

Previously, at the 17th ASIAD in 2014, the Vietnamese Olympic team under coach Toshiya Miura (Japanese) caused a stir when they defeated the Iranian Olympic team 4-1. This was the first time Vietnamese football had won with such a big margin against an Iranian national team.

Previously, at the 2007 Asian Cup, the Vietnamese team beat the UAE 2-0 and drew 1-1 with Qatar in the group stage, thereby reaching the quarter-finals. That was the first time in history that the Vietnamese team reached the quarter-finals of the Asian championship.

In general, most of the historical achievements of Vietnamese football at different levels come from the earthquakes we created against West Asian teams. In addition, these achievements are closely associated with the biggest names of Vietnamese football later on: the generation of Le Cong Vinh, Phan Thanh Binh, Phan Van Tai Em, Nguyen Minh Phuong... in 2007, Nguyen Quang Hai, Tran Dinh Trong, Doan Van Hau, Nguyen Tien Linh... in 2016 and 2018.

Vietnamese players may be inferior to West Asian players in terms of quality (body shape, physical strength, endurance), but our players are rated much higher than West Asian players in terms of tactical discipline. This is an important reason why Vietnamese teams often surprise teams from West Asia, before we create our own historical milestones.

U.17 UAE is also a West Asian team, the achievement of participating in the U.17 World Cup is also a historic achievement, if the current U.17 Vietnam team wins the right to participate in the world youth tournament. Facing a West Asian team and a historical milestone, U.17 Vietnam will have more motivation to defeat U.17 UAE on the night of April 10, helping Vietnamese youth football reap more sweet fruits in the international arena.
