Indonesia Vietnam women's volleyball team entered the semi-finals of the AVC Challenge Cup 2023 without losing a set.

Vietnam faced Taiwan in the final round of the group stage this afternoon, June 23, at the Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gresik Stadium, Indonesia. Vietnam's defense played well, bringing home 13 points, while the back line circulated the ball and defended well, helping the team make only eight errors throughout the match.

Captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy continued to be the bright spot when she scored 22 points, helping Vietnam win easily after three sets with scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-19. Vietnam went through a four-match unbeaten streak at the tournament without losing a set.

Before that, the team won 3-0 against Mongolia and Uzbekistan in the qualifying round. In the group stage, Vietnam overwhelmingly beat Iran 25-10, 25-9 and 25-18 before defeating Taiwan today.

The all-win record helps Vietnam to top Group F, followed by Taiwan. This position helps coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet and his team have a high chance of avoiding Indonesia - a strong opponent and host - and instead meet India or the Philippines in the semi-finals tomorrow, June 24.

The AVC Challenge Cup was established by the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) in 2018, held every two years for lower-level national women's teams, following the Asian Volleyball Championship and the Asian Volleyball Cup. The first two editions were held in Hong Kong but had to be canceled due to the pandemic and force majeure. In 2022, the tournament will be held for the first time in Thailand with Hong Kong as the champion.

The winner of the 2023 AVC Challenge Cup will qualify for the 2023 FIVB Challenge Cup of the International Volleyball Federation.

Before this tournament, Vietnam won the silver medal at the 32nd SEA Games after losing to Thailand. The team won the 2023 Asian Club Volleyball Championship when they came from behind to beat Diamond Food Fine Chef 3-2, thereby winning a ticket to the World Club Volleyball Championship at the end of the year.
