Accordingly, Vietnam Airlines will operate a direct flight between Hanoi and Phnom Penh with a frequency of 4 round-trip flights per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The flights will be operated by modern Airbus A321 jet aircraft. The route will operate from October 27, 2024. Currently, passengers wishing to fly from Hanoi to Phnom Penh need to transit in Vientiane, Laos on the airline's trans-Indochina flight.

This new route will increase the total number of Vietnam Airlines flights between Vietnam and Cambodia to 5 from the end of October, including 4 direct routes: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City - Phnom Penh; Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City - Siem Reap and 1 route across Indochina. The total number of flights between the two countries will be up to 86 flights per week.

The Vietnam - Cambodia route is one of the first routes operated by Vietnam Airlines since its establishment 31 years ago. Throughout its formation and development, expanding its route to Cambodia - a neighboring country close to Vietnam, has always been one of the strategic directions of Vietnam Airlines.

With a wide flight network in Indochina, Vietnam Airlines has many advantages in exploitation. This is a very attractive flight product for customers who want to travel to combine Vietnam with destinations in the region such as Japan, Korea, and European countries thanks to the high flight frequency and convenient connecting times.

With its tireless efforts, Vietnam Airlines has transported nearly 8.2 million passengers and 28,400 tons of cargo on more than 81,000 flights between Vietnam and Cambodia over the past three decades.

Mr. Dang Ngoc Hoa - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airlines shared: "The direct flight route between the two capitals, when officially put into operation, will contribute to increasing the connection network between the two countries. Besides the role of a geographical bridge, transiting passengers or goods, direct flights are also "ambassadors" to strongly promote the bilateral relations between the two countries, helping the friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia to become increasingly close."

The airline will focus on further promoting its role as a “bridge” to contribute to comprehensively promoting the economic, social and cultural relations, as well as the neighborly cooperative relationship between the two countries,” Mr. Dang Ngoc Hoa affirmed.

In addition to announcing the opening of new routes, Vietnam Airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding with partners: Cambodia Angkor Air, Cambodia Tourism Association and SaigonTourist Group within the framework of the Tourism and Aviation Promotion Program “Two Countries - One Destination”. Accordingly, Vietnam Airlines will coordinate with partners to enhance two-way tourism promotion, support each other in promotional activities, marketing and cooperation on aviation products and services.

Cambodia is a potential market for the aviation and tourism industries. In more than 30 years of operation, the total aviation market of the two countries has reached an average of 450,000 passengers per year, with an average growth of 24% per year. Vietnam ranks second in the number of tourists to Cambodia with more than 1 million arrivals in 2023. In the opposite direction, Cambodian tourists to Vietnam reached more than 400,000 arrivals, ranking 8th among the markets sending international visitors to Vietnam.
