Losing to Nikhat Zareen 0-5 in the final, boxer Nguyen Thi Tam won the Silver Medal in the under 50kg category at the 2023 Women's Boxing World Championship.
On the evening of March 26, in India, boxer Nguyen Thi Tam of Vietnam faced boxer Nikhat Zareen of the host country in the final of the women's under 50kg category of the 2023 Women's World Boxing Championship. Although underestimated, Nguyen Thi Tam confidently chose an active attacking style. However, in this round, the Vietnamese boxer received a yellow card for twice pushing her opponent to the ground. In the second round, Nikhat Zareen was given a yellow card and warned for choking her opponent. Nguyen Thi Tam dominated the second round.
The third round was exciting as both fighters played an attacking game. Nikhat Zareen, the reigning 52kg world champion, showed his class by stunning Nguyen Thi Tam with a series of straight punches. However, the Vietnamese fighters responded with quality.
At the end of the match, Nguyen Thi Tam lost 0-5 to Nikhat Zareen. Four judges scored 28-27 and one judge scored 29-26 for boxer Nikhat Zareen. This is the second time boxer Nikhat Zareen has won the world championship. Meanwhile, this is the first time Nguyen Thi Tam has won the world silver medal.
The 2023 Women's World Boxing Championship takes place from March 15 to 26. The prize money for each gold medal is 100,000 USD, silver medals receive 50,000 USD and bronze medals receive 25,000 USD. Thus, with the silver medal, Nguyen Thi Tam received a prize of 50,000 USD (nearly 1.2 billion VND).
