On the morning of October 7, the Food Safety and Hygiene Department under the Department of Health of Quang Tri province confirmed that it had just received the results of food sample tests from the Pasteur Institute in Nha Trang related to the case of 40 students of Kim Thuy Primary Boarding School (Kim Ngan commune) who were poisoned and had to be hospitalized.
Test results showed that out of the four food samples sent, one sample tested positive for Bacillus cereus bacteria. This is a common bacteria found in soil, dust, water and food, often causing poisoning if cooked food is left out for a long time. People infected with Bacillus cereus may experience vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain.
The leaders of this unit have informed the results to the People's Committee of Kim Ngan commune as a basis for handling the responsibilities of those involved, including the female Vice Principal Do Thi Hong Hue , who directly manages the kitchen.
Previously on September 26, 40 students of Kim Thuy Primary Boarding School were hospitalized due to food poisoning after eating banh tay (a type of cake made from sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves) for breakfast. Many students said that banh tay had a sour smell and was watery when eaten.
Many times before, students had eaten this type of bread for breakfast and also had stomach aches but not enough to have to go to the hospital.
Recordings from the school's medical room show that when the school's medical staff suggested taking the student to the hospital, Vice Principal Do Thi Hong Hue instructed not to take him.
"Leave them where they are. I can confirm 100% that the children are fine. Do not take them to the hospital. We, the principal and vice principal, have to handle the work. The children are fine. Leave them there. There is no problem at all," Ms. Hue told the principal.
