Tu Du Hospital successfully treated a case of 4 premature, low birth weight babies.Dr. Nguyen Huu Hung, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health , said that in 2017, the city's population work achieved most of its targets and exceeded the plan. Regarding improving population quality, the rate of prenatal screening for mothers and the number of newborn screening for children both met the target of over 80%; the sex ratio at birth was maintained at a reasonable level of 106.9 boys/100 girls; the rate of couples using contraceptive methods currently met the set target.
However, according to Dr. Hung, the current fertility rate of women of childbearing age in the city is lower than the replacement level, which is only about 1.45, while the standard is 2.1. Over the past five years, the fertility rate in the city has gradually decreased.
“In developed countries, many women participate in social work. In addition to the pressure of work to have enough money to raise children, there is also the problem of spending time raising children, which leads to women not wanting to give birth or having few children. So far, no country has successfully increased the birth rate, even though they spend a lot of money to do so,” said Dr. Hung. According to Dr. Hung, the decrease in birth rate will lead to a shortage of labor and a lack of resources to build the country.
According to Dr. Hung, in addition to promoting and mobilizing the city's people about their responsibilities and obligations for the benefit of national development, there needs to be a comprehensive social solution. Pregnant women need a workplace that creates conditions for them to both ensure their jobs and have time to take care of their pregnancy. Create conditions to support postpartum women - workers with young children - with economic conditions, childcare, places to play, study, etc. However, regarding the issue of birth promotion, the health sector has not yet had any policy.
