Just returning from the 2024 Olympics, Ugandan athlete was burned alive by her boyfriend

Rebecca Cheptegei, a long-distance runner who finished 44th at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was attacked by her boyfriend at her home in Trans Nzoia, Kenya's Rift Valley province.

According to Trans Nzoia Police Chief Jeremiah ole Kosiom on September 2, Cheptegei’s boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, bought a can of petrol, poured petrol on Cheptegei and set it on fire during an argument on September 1.

Ndiema also sustained burns and both are receiving specialist treatment at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret city.

Cheptegei's parents said their 33-year-old daughter bought land in Trans Nzoia to be close to the many sports training centres in the area.

A local chief report said that before the incident, the couple had an argument over the land where the house was built.
