Based on the desire to find a new direction for local agriculture , from the end of April 2024, Mr. Nguyen The Hoan (Binh Phong village, Mai Hoa commune) decided to renovate 1,200 m² of hilly land to grow peony grapes. This is a type of grape originating from Japan, requiring high techniques and strict care conditions. In the beginning, the model encountered many difficulties due to the hot and humid climate of Ha Tinh , while peony grapes cannot withstand drought and prolonged rain. To overcome this, Mr. Hoan built a heat-resistant roof and rented a machine to create raised beds to drain water when it rains and keep the soil moist, creating favorable conditions for plant growth.
After more than a year of planting, the tree has begun to adapt and bear fruit. From mid-July until now, Mr. Hoan has harvested more than 200 kg of grapes, with stable quality, rich sweetness, coolness, and relatively uniform appearance. Currently, Mr. Hoan sells grapes at 200,000 VND/kg, mostly consumed locally and with some orders from neighboring communes. Total income from the first crop is estimated at more than 40 million VND. Although not a large number compared to the investment cost, with a new model, this harvest is considered a success in terms of technique and commercialization ability. “I chose peony grapes because this is a high-value variety, suitable for current consumption trends. Although the care techniques are quite complicated and the yield is not high at first, the tree can live up to 20 years, with 2 crops per year and from the 3rd year it will give a more stable yield. After the first crop, I believe more and more that this land can completely develop a new, clean and sustainable peony grape growing model,” Mr. Hoan shared.
Currently, Mr. Hoan is planning to expand the planting area and self-propagate to continue developing the vineyard next year. At the same time, he is also willing to share his experience and provide technical support to some local households who want to convert crops. The vineyard has also attracted many people to visit and take photos, especially young people. According to Mr. Hoan, this is also an opportunity to promote the clean grape growing model to consumers, while opening up a direction for agricultural tourism development in the future.
