Pleiku Sculpture Garden idea come true?

Việt NamViệt Nam15/08/2024

(GLO)- The idea of a sculpture garden in Pleiku has been hatched, but whether it becomes a reality or not depends on the determination and enthusiasm from many sides.

A sculpture garden (or sculpture park) is an outdoor park displaying sculptures in the open space of nature. This is where people and tourists visit, check-in and learn more about the cultural life of a city.

In recent years, the sculpture garden is no longer a strange concept when this model has appeared at Hoan Kiem Lake, at the Cultural and Tourism Village of Vietnamese Ethnic Groups (Hanoi), in the center of Viet Tri City (Phu Tho Province), on the banks of the Huong River (Hue City), at APEC Park (Da Nang City), in Tao Dan Park (Ho Chi Minh City), in the pine forest of Da Lat (Lam Dong Province) or in the middle of the sea breeze of Quy Nhon (Binh Dinh Province)... The works of art are arranged in this open space in harmony with nature, affirming the urban identity.

Three years ago, sculptor Nguyen Vinh, Vice President of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association in Gia Lai , mentioned the need for a plan for an art sculpture garden in Pleiku. But perhaps because at that time, everyone was struggling to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, this idea was forgotten.

However, he still cherishes the desire to make the city he lives in more beautiful every day with the idea of mobilizing socialization to build an art space to highlight the urban appearance of Pleiku. The location of the sculpture garden can be along Anh Hung Nup Street (next to Dai Doan Ket Square) or along Hoi Phu Stream - from Ba Trieu Street to Minh Thanh Pagoda.

According to sculptor Nguyen Vinh, the sculpture garden will display sculptures honoring the country, people, life and love... Of course, there must be works bearing the mark of the Central Highlands. For now, if it cannot be completed with durable materials such as stone or bronze, it can be done with cement.

To contribute to the realization of this romantic idea, he affirmed that he is willing to contribute about 10 statues (2-3 m high). One of them is a portrait statue of Hero Nup made of composite material, measuring 2.3 x 1.4 m.

When the idea was proposed, sculptor Nguyen Vinh received the approval of the art world. For many years, he has been trusted by the People's Committee of Pleiku City to create the mascot of the year to display at Dai Doan Ket Square every Lunar New Year. He also has had his work collected by the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts. Recently, the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts raised the issue of buying his work "Hollow Earth 4" after it was featured in the 5-year national sculpture exhibition.

He added: Some sculptors in provinces and cities across the country affirmed their support if there is a systematic planning of a sculpture garden in the mountain town. A sculpture park rich in themes and diverse in styles by famous authors is an effective way to promote culture and tourism not only for Pleiku.

Without waiting for the above “project”, recently, sculptor Nguyen Vinh has donated his works to a number of suitable addresses to open up opportunities for the public to access sculpture art. He donated a portrait of painter Xu Man to the Provincial Museum, and two portraits of patriot Le Van Huan and monk Thien Chieu to the Con Dao Museum (Ba Ria-Vung Tau province).

In a recent article, poet Thanh Thao, who has many profound memories of Pleiku, suggested: “Nowadays, there is a movement in the world to build smart cities. That is necessary. But the world still knows, like a mathematical law of imperfection, what else is beyond intelligence. And that is the premise for the idea of “emotional cities” to be born. I remember the music by Pham Duy to the poem “Con mot chut gi de nho” by Vu Huu Dinh. I remember the paintings by the late veteran artist Nguyen The Vinh depicting Bahnar Gia Lai girls pounding rice or doing ordinary daily labor.

Both music, poetry and paintings about Pleiku-Gia Lai are full of emotions. Just thinking about Pleiku makes us feel nostalgic. That is the emotion that a city gives to people.

The concept of an emotional city is truly new. This will become a reality when there is a determination to build a separate “brand” for Pleiku. In addition to its dynamic and modern appearance, this land is also remembered for its profound poetry and art. The problem is that in addition to the ideas and hearts of artists, it needs the proper attention of relevant levels and sectors.
