Overcoming big waves at sea to transport stroke patient to mainland for emergency treatment

A stroke patient who suffered from right-sided paralysis and facial paralysis was quickly transferred to the mainland for emergency treatment by doctors from Van Don Regional General Hospital in coordination with the Co To Border Guard amid strong winds and large waves.

A 48-year-old male patient (residing in Nam Giang commune, Quang Tri province) was in a state of severe headache, right hemiplegia and facial paralysis. Notably, the patient had a history of stroke in early 2025.

Through clinical examination, the doctors recorded: the patient had right hemiplegia, left facial paralysis, blood pressure 150/100 mmHg. The doctor immediately performed a CT scan of the patient's brain.

Van Don Regional General Hospital - Facility 2 cooperated with Co To Border Guard Station to transport a stroke patient in bad weather.

CT scan results showed that the patient had hemorrhage in the left putamen-radial region, old lesions in the occipital lobe, and old lesions in the bilateral corona radiata.

Recognizing this as a dangerous case of cerebral hemorrhage, the on-duty team promptly provided initial emergency treatment, stabilizing hemodynamics and vital functions, ensuring not to miss the "golden time" in stroke treatment.

However, the process of transporting patients to the mainland encountered many difficulties due to strong northeast monsoon winds and big waves, seriously affecting transportation between the island and the mainland.

Faced with the urgent situation, Facility 2 activated a coordination plan with Co To Border Guard Station, urgently mobilizing appropriate vehicles to ensure maximum safety for transportation.

After reaching the mainland, the patient was transferred to a medical facility for stroke treatment.

Along with that, the medical team from Van Don Regional General Hospital accompanied to closely monitor the neurological - circulatory - respiratory condition, ready to handle any unusual developments during the move.

The above case once again demonstrates the ability to respond quickly, handle accurately, and effectively coordinate between Van Don Regional General Hospital and the Border Guard force in ensuring emergency aid for people and tourists on the island, especially in complex weather conditions.
