Wang Chuqin has just helped Chinese table tennis reclaim its world number 1 position, after an overwhelming 4-0 (11-9, 11-7, 11-9, 11-4) victory over Hugo Calderano (Brazil) in the men's singles final at the WTT Champions in Macau.
This victory helped him send a strong message to Chinese fans about the team's position: "I am really happy to be able to beat Hugo. With the recent comments about the team's situation, I personally want to give my all to win this match.
To prove to everyone that the Chinese table tennis team is still a strong team."
In the women's singles, Sun Yingsha also helped Chinese table tennis assert its position. She won 4-3 against compatriot Wang Manyu. This is her 5th WTT title of the year.
The Chinese men’s table tennis team has been criticised for some poor performances in recent months. Lin Shidong, who will drop to second in the world next week, was surprisingly eliminated in the quarterfinals of the tournament by Anders Lind of Denmark, ranked 19th.
Previously, at the ITTF World Cup also in Macau in April, Hugo Calderano (Brazil) created an earthquake when he defeated a series of Chinese players to win the championship. Lin Shidong was the defeated opponent in the final match of the Brazilian player, after eliminating Wang in the semi-finals.
