Wilshere now only wants to be a professional coach |
The position has been vacant since Mehmet Ali left for Brentford earlier this summer. Ali guided the Gunners’ youth team to an eighth-place finish in the Premier League 2 last season. At Brentford, he took on the role of assistant first-team coach under new head coach Keith Andrews.
Arsenal's board of directors are keen to quickly find a replacement, with one name on the shortlist being a favourite among fans at the Emirates.
However, according to BBC Sport , club legend Jack Wilshere has refused to reunite with his boyhood club. The 32-year-old is said to have held talks with Arsenal officials after being approached for the position. However, after careful consideration, he politely informed the club that he had no intention of accepting the offer.
Wilshere's reasons were entirely career-oriented: he was determined to take his first steps in coaching at the professional football level, prioritizing opportunities to work directly in a first-team coaching environment.
Wilshere, who made more than 150 starts for Arsenal after coming through the club's youth system, left the Emirates last season to join the Norwich City coaching staff under Johannes Thorup.
At Carrow Road, he was initially appointed assistant first-team coach, before being promoted to caretaker manager following Thorup's departure in April. He took charge of the team for the final stages of the Championship season but was then replaced by Liam Manning, who was appointed permanent manager.
Since retiring in 2022, Wilshere has accelerated his coaching career, obtaining his Pro Licence and quickly gaining experience in both youth and senior football.
