Chieng Chau commune preserves Thai culture associated with tourism

Faced with the intersection of different cultures, the Thai ethnic group in Chieng Chau commune (Mai Chau) is preserving and promoting national identity through maintaining traditional cultural features.

This place preserves the stilt houses with four-roof architecture, two main roofs and a square gable roof. The roof has been improved to be raised, the floor is high, the pillars are placed, the floor is high, the walls and floors are made of wooden planks, and the stairs are wooden. The stilt houses have also been changed in structure to be more suitable, more beautiful in architecture but still show the thinking of the ancients as well as the continuity of generations.

In addition, women's costumes, especially white scarves and black scarves, are a unique cultural feature. In addition to everyday clothes, people often reserve two of the most beautiful sets to wear during festivals, holidays, and art performances to welcome tourists . In the commune, there are more than 10 art troupes specializing in serving and performing. The ingenuity of Thai girls is not only shown in their costumes but also in the image of them diligently weaving beautiful brocades on the loom. In the area, there is a brocade weaving cooperative that attracts over 30 members.

Cultural preservation is associated with tourism development through community cultural activities, the "Rain-praying" festival, "Xen Ban, Xen Muong", "Cha Chieng" festival. One of the popular festivals is the "New Rice Celebration" festival. Comrade Ha Van Hoi, Vice Chairman of the People's Council of Chieng Chau commune, said: Although the New Rice Festival is family in nature, it is also a festival. According to ancient beliefs, the Thai people believe that having a bumper crop is partly due to the blessings of heaven and earth and ancestors. After each harvest, families often hold a rice offering ceremony to express their deep gratitude.

Every year, to preserve Thai writing as well as national cultural identity associated with community tourism development (CBT), the Commune Community Learning Center opens Thai writing classes and training courses on CBT. From here, the awareness of organizations, individuals doing tourism business, tourism services and the community about the role and position of the tourism industry is raised, environmental protection work is better. Organizations and individuals boldly invest in building hotels and community guesthouses to meet the needs of tourists.

Sharing about the Thai ethnic group's tourism practices, Ms. Ha Thi Tim, a community tourism household in Lac village, said: The village has 125 households with over 500 people, of which the Thai ethnic group accounts for 98%. Previously, people only lived on rice cultivation, farming and brocade weaving. Later, the natural beauty and cultural space of the Thai people have attracted many domestic and international tourists to explore and experience. Currently, the village has 74 households participating in tourism activities, and people have proactively developed, searched for markets and linked with travel agencies.

According to comrade Ha Van Hoi, Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Council, in the strategy for developing community tourism in Lac village, authorities at all levels pay attention to preserving traditional culture, such as restoring festivals, traditional craft villages... In cultural activities such as eating, living, dressing, traditional cultural features are also focused on. Agricultural activities and traditional craft villages are maintained. Visitors to the village can participate in daily activities with the host as a way to experience local life, through cooking, weaving or renting bicycles and electric cars to visit villages and stroll in the fields. Renting costumes for photography is also an activity that many young people love when visiting Lac village. Along with that are tourism services imbued with national cultural identity such as performing arts and Thai xoe dances. The village also has a large area of land to organize camping activities, cultural and artistic exchanges.

In addition to promoting market information, trade promotion activities, and building local tourism brands, Chieng Chau commune continues to raise community awareness in preserving and promoting national cultural identity; collect and compile documents introducing customs, landscapes, maintain and develop festivals of the Thai ethnic group, art forms such as flutes, panpipes, xoe dance, bamboo dance..., develop stilt house cultural tourism, cultural - ecological tourism, culinary cultural tourism, traditional crafts, folk culture to promote the image of local culture and tourism to domestic and international tourists.
