Recently, specialist doctor II Nguyen Tien Thanh - Vietnam Dermatology Association received treatment for NPT (15 years old, living in Hanoi ) who had complications after lip tattooing.

Accordingly, the patient, NTP, followed her sister to get her lips tattooed at a beauty salon in Hoang Mai district, Hanoi. Two days after getting the tattoo, the child's lips began to itch, swell, ache, and many pustules with yellow crusts appeared... The condition became more and more severe, culminating in the pimples starting to burst, leak fluid, bleed... causing the child pain.

The family took the child to see a dermatologist. After the examination, Dr. Thanh diagnosed the child with an allergy to tattoo ink, herpes infection, secondary infection due to lip tattooing, and the risk of permanent scarring. The patient needs to take care of the wound on the lips daily, take antibiotics, antivirals, and apply moisturizers to reduce the risk of scarring.

According to Master, Specialist Doctor II Nguyen Tien Thanh, lip tattooing is not suitable for children. Lip injection or lip tattooing for children can have many consequences, even harmful effects that you cannot foresee.

There are two types of tattoo ink: organic ink extracted from natural products and inorganic ink containing metal oxides to preserve color (usually iron oxide, even lead). The higher the metal oxide content (the more toxic the ink is to body cells), the better the color retention. When the body is infected with a small amount of metal oxide, it can be eliminated by itself, but if overdosed, such as lead, mercury can cause liver and kidney poisoning, especially in children.

In addition, when tattooing, there is a risk of tattoo ink allergy, infection (swelling, prolonged redness, bleeding), viral infection (herpes labialis, HIV, hepatitis...) due to sterilized tools at beauty facilities with inadequate equipment, unqualified practitioners... leading to complications such as keloid scars, hypertrophic scars, contracture scars, and deformity of the lips.

According to experts, young people under 18 years old should not undergo cosmetic surgery or intensive cosmetic intervention because this group is in the stage of physical development, and subsequent changes in the body may not be suitable for the cosmetic procedures performed. Lip tattooing is a seemingly simple beauty service but also requires ensuring certain factors regarding sterility, equipment, and professional qualifications of the doctor...

Dr. Thanh further recommends that tattooing interventions for children should be carefully considered, parents and customers need to be explained to understand the risks and complications that may occur before performing the procedure. Most importantly, customers need to choose licensed beauty facilities and well-trained specialists to limit unnecessary complications that may affect the future.
