Building and developing the brand of Song Da fish and shrimp

With a large hydroelectric reservoir, Hoa Binh is one of the five provinces with the greatest potential in the country for developing reservoir aquaculture. In fact, in recent years, cage fish farming has developed strongly, and fish and shrimp products from the Da River in Hoa Binh have become familiar brands to consumers inside and outside the province.

In the coming time, Hoa Binh province has identified tourism as the "locomotive" for sustainable development of aquaculture on Hoa Binh hydroelectric lake. (Photo in Thung Nai commune, Cao Phong district).

Hoa Binh is a mountainous province in the Northwest with relatively large potential for aquaculture development with over 14,560 hectares of water surface. In particular, the Hoa Binh hydroelectric reservoir with an area of 8,892 hectares has created favorable conditions for the development of reservoir aquaculture. In recent years, the Provincial Party Committee, People's Council, and Provincial People's Committee have issued policies to support and encourage the development of cage fish farming on the Hoa Binh hydroelectric reservoir. Notably, Decision No. 1354/QD-UBND, dated July 5, 2021 of the Provincial People's Committee on promulgating the Action Plan to implement Decision No. 339/QD-TTg, dated March 11, 2021 of the Prime Minister on the Strategy for Aquaculture Development to 2030, with a vision to 2045 in Hoa Binh province. Thanks to that, the fish farming in cages and rafts on Hoa Binh hydroelectric lake has developed very quickly. The number of fish cages/rafts in 2014 was 1,700, now it has increased to nearly 5,000.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, there are currently a number of enterprises and cooperatives in the Hoa Binh Lake area raising aquatic products with organic and VietGAP processes. The system of cages, rafts, and machinery has been invested in, applying the most advanced techniques. Thanks to that, the quality of aquatic products is always guaranteed. Some products from aquatic products raised on the lake have been recognized as 4-star OCOP products. 2018 marked a new development step for the aquaculture industry on Hoa Binh Lake, when the Intellectual Property Office granted the trademark certificates "Da River Fish - Hoa Binh" and "Da River Shrimp - Hoa Binh".

In the mountainous district of Da Bac, Da Giang ECO Cooperative, Tien Phong commune is one of the pioneers in the field of developing the district's aquaculture industry in raising clean fish according to VietGAP standards. Tien Phong commune has 5 hamlets bordering Hoa Binh lake, and cage fish farming has long been focused on by local people. However, due to many difficulties in output and technical limitations, economic efficiency has not been as expected. In 2023, Da Giang ECO Cooperative was established, linking households in production and consumption of products. Up to now, the cooperative's products of black carp from the Da River, black catfish from the Da River, and catfish from the Da River have been recognized as 3-star OCOP products. According to the Director of Da Giang ECO Cooperative, Xa Ngoc Hung: Currently, the cooperative focuses on more specialized processed fish products, such as: dried black carp with mac khen, fried Da River goby, and "Da River ferryman" braised fish. Besides the cooperative's efforts in searching and expanding product consumption markets, the support and promotion activities organized by the province have brought positive effects in promoting the development of cage fish farming in the locality.

In recent times, the province has implemented a variety of promotional and trade promotion activities for Da River fish and shrimp products. Notably, the first Da River Fish and Shrimp Festival in Hoa Binh Province in 2023 was successfully organized. In order to build and develop the Da River fish and shrimp brand, on June 5, 2024, the Provincial People's Committee issued Decision No. 966/QD-UBND approving the Project on Developing Aquaculture in Hoa Binh Hydropower Reservoir in Association with Tourism by 2030. The project has identified specific goals by 2030, such as: Building 8 concentrated cage aquaculture areas associated with tours, routes, and tourist spots in the Hoa Binh Lake area; 10,000 cages, aquaculture production value reaching 500 billion VND/year; 80% of cage fish farming facilities apply good aquaculture production processes (VietGAP) or equivalent.

Comrade Luong Thanh Hai, Head of the provincial Department of Fisheries, emphasized: The project is a legal basis and strategic orientation for managing, developing and exploiting the potential and advantages of aquatic products in Hoa Binh reservoir until 2030. The province identifies tourism as the "driver" to enhance the value of the Da River shrimp and fish brand. Hoa Binh hopes that tourism will go first, pave the way and will be the locomotive to develop aquatic products, at the same time tourism is also a distribution and consumption channel for products. Tourists will be consumers of Da River shrimp and fish. The province's long-term and sustainable orientation is to exploit the brand value of Da River shrimp and fish, not to produce Da River aquatic products.
