Building high quality fruit growing areas

Implementing the policy of converting crop structure, many localities in the province have formed concentrated fruit tree growing areas on a large scale, which have yielded harvests and brought high economic efficiency.

To promote the potential and develop fruit trees sustainably, the provincial Department of Agriculture has been implementing many solutions, expanding the area according to the planning, aiming to improve the quality and value of products.

Step by step to promote strengths

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, in 2021, after the Project on building fruit growing areas associated with commodity processing and product branding (referred to as the Project) was approved by the Provincial People's Committee, many localities in the province have proactively expanded the planning area in each region, suitable for each type of fruit tree; at the same time, promoting mechanization of production, application of science and technology, and pest control during planting, care and harvesting.

Up to now, the whole province has more than 6,907 hectares of fruit trees, with an estimated output of more than 53,412 tons/year. Of which, the area of perennial fruit trees with high economic value accounts for nearly 2,000 hectares such as: durian, jackfruit, avocado, mango, custard apple, orange, grapefruit, guava, lychee, longan, pineapple... are grown in districts with fertile red basalt soil such as Song Hinh, Tay Hoa, Son Hoa, a few in Phu Hoa and Dong Xuan.

For example, in Song Hinh district, in the past 5-7 years, with the guidance, mobilization and encouragement of the Party Committee and government, many households have actively learned from the experiences of fruit growers in and outside the province, gradually switching to growing trees with high economic value; especially durian.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hai, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of this district said: In order for fruit trees to develop sustainably and increasingly increase their value in the market, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has consulted with the District People's Committee to invest in infrastructure construction, detailed planning of growing areas, building many models of crops with high economic value; supporting people to produce in an organic direction and become OCOP products of the district; at the same time, organizing scientific and technical training on safe fruit tree production... Up to now, the district has built many models of growing fruit trees with high economic value with a total area of nearly 2,000 hectares, with an output of more than 20,000 tons/year.

In Dong Xuan, according to the district's Department of Agriculture and Environment, the intensive farming model and fruit tree development following VietGAP standards is developing. In the past 3 years, the district has used agricultural extension funds and other capital sources to support and distribute 23,870 fruit tree varieties in communes and towns. In 2024 alone, the district supported 8,683 jackfruit, grapefruit, coconut, mango, orange trees, etc., increasing the total fruit tree production area in the district to more than 350 hectares.

Mr. Duong Luong's family in Xuan Long commune (Dong Xuan district) is one of the pioneers in changing the crop structure on the family's mixed garden area. Mr. Luong shared: Previously, more than 5 hectares of land of the family only grew acacia. Realizing the value of fruit trees, I invested in a sprinkler irrigation system, switching all to growing tangerines and green-skinned grapefruit. Thanks to proper care according to technical processes, the fruit trees in the garden have been harvested for 2 years. With an average selling price of 30,000 VND/kg of grapefruit, 20,000-25,000 VND/kg of tangerines, after deducting expenses, my family has an income of more than 300 million VND/year.

Need sustainable development solutions

Although the area and output of fruit trees in the province have increased, according to the assessment of the provincial Department of Agriculture, in general, fruit tree production areas are still small-scale, the harvest output is still seasonal, fresh fruit after harvest is sold directly to traders or users without going through the preliminary processing and preservation stages. Most farmers have not been instructed on harvesting, preliminary processing and preservation techniques. In addition, the production, processing and consumption chain on fruit trees has not been closely linked between farmers and consuming enterprises, so most fruit products in the province do not have stable output.

To focus on developing high-quality fruit growing areas, the Department of Agriculture has proactively coordinated with departments to implement the tasks of the Project. Specifically, developing policies to support fruit growing (Resolution 15 of the Provincial People's Council and Decision 1202 of the Provincial People's Committee); inspecting, granting and monitoring growing area codes; supporting the building of brands, collective trademarks, geographical indications of products, etc.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuong, Vice Chairman of Phu Hoa District People's Committee said: The district will continue to direct and monitor intensive fruit tree cultivation models (jackfruit, avocado) in communes that have received seed support; encourage people to renovate and intensively cultivate existing areas to improve productivity and quality of fruit orchards; coordinate with the Agricultural Extension Center, the Department of Crop Production and Livestock... to propagate and guide people to apply scientific and technical advances in production.

According to Ms. Dang Thi Thuy, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the potential for fruit trees in the province is huge. In order for fruit trees to develop sustainably and revive the potential of fruit trees, it is necessary to have a connection to form concentrated production areas in the form of cooperatives, cooperative groups and branches and professional associations. There must be consensus from the "4 houses", in which the State and scientists play an important role in planning specialized areas, providing technical guidance to farmers on which fruit trees are suitable, and how to preserve them properly to increase the rate of fruit tree products that meet good standards. At the same time, support businesses with information and funding in trade promotion and brand building to fully exploit existing strengths.

“In the coming time, the Department of Agriculture will continue to promote and encourage farmers to renovate mixed gardens and gardens with low economic efficiency, guide farmers to monitor and promptly prevent and treat diseases in fruit orchards; promote and guide farmers on intensive farming measures, increase quality and production efficiency for the province's key fruit trees,” Ms. Thuy added.

According to the Project, the goal is to continue focusing on developing the fruit tree area by the end of 2025 to about 8,000 hectares, with an output of about 55,000 tons; by 2030, the area will be about 10,000 hectares, with an output of about 65,000 tons; at the same time, calling for investors to build facilities to process and prepare fruit tree products.
