Traditional Vietnamese Medicine: Connecting the quintessence of traditional medicine with modern medical achievements

On May 19, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine solemnly held a ceremony to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the academy's founding (2005-2025) and the 55th anniversary of the tradition of Vietnam's Traditional Medicine and Pharmacy (1969-2025).

This is an opportunity to honor the great contributions of the Academy in training and developing human resources in traditional medicine, while affirming the important role of traditional medicine in taking care of people's health and developing modern medicine.

Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine and Pharmacy, formerly known as Tue Tinh Traditional Medicine High School, was established in 1969. With the continuous efforts of generations of teachers and students, in 2005, the Academy was officially established under Decision No. 30/2005/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister , marking an important milestone in the development of Vietnam's traditional medicine and pharmacy industry.

Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long presented flowers to congratulate the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine.

The ceremony was honored to welcome leaders, former leaders of the Party, State, Government, ministries, central and local departments, and international delegations. Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long, former Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem, and Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam Ha Vi attended and spoke at the event. Also present at the ceremony were leaders of the Academy through the periods, health departments, research institutes, and generations of teachers, students and trainees of the Academy.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long affirmed the importance of traditional medicine in people's health care and socio-economic development.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that Vietnam's traditional medicine sector is not only an indispensable part of the national health system, but also plays an important role in preserving and promoting national cultural identity, while contributing to national economic growth.

The Deputy Prime Minister also commended the proud achievements that the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine has made in training traditional medicine human resources, contributing to the cause of protecting people's health, with nearly 11,000 trained medical staff, accounting for more than 50% of traditional medicine human resources nationwide.

On this occasion, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long cut the ribbon to inaugurate the Traditional Room of the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine. This is an important event, not only a place to preserve the cultural and historical values ​​of traditional medicine, but also an opportunity for the community to better understand the outstanding achievements of the field of traditional medicine in Vietnam.

On the school side, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Huy, Director of the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine, in his speech reviewing the Academy's traditions, emphasized that the Academy has always been at the forefront of harmoniously combining traditional and modern medicine.

During more than 50 years of construction and development, the Academy has trained thousands of doctors, pharmacists, and traditional medicine experts, making important contributions to the cause of protecting and improving people's health.

The Academy has constantly innovated and improved the quality of training, ensuring the inheritance and promotion of the quintessence of traditional medicine, while selectively absorbing the achievements of modern medicine to apply to treatment and scientific research.

Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine has also implemented many international cooperation activities with prestigious training and scientific research institutions in China, Europe, and Asia.

These activities not only help improve the quality of training but also create conditions for students and lecturers of the Academy to access advanced medical methods and techniques, thereby contributing to improving the capacity of the domestic healthcare system.

In the context of deep international integration, the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine is continuing to implement projects to upgrade facilities and train high-quality human resources.

Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long has directed the Academy to strengthen cooperation in scientific research and training with countries with developed traditional medicine such as China, Japan, South Korea, and European countries.

One of the important projects is the construction of the Academy's second campus in Ngoc My commune, Quoc Oai district, Hanoi, with an area of ​​up to 17 hectares, to meet the development needs of the academy in the new period.

At the same time, the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine is proposing to be included in the planning list as a key national university education institution in Traditional Medicine to meet the school's mission and vision.

"Looking to the future, the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine continues its mission of training high-quality human resources, developing scientific research and technology transfer, pioneering in preserving and promoting the heritage of traditional medicine, making positive contributions to the health system of Vietnam and the world" - Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Huy emphasized.
