>> Yen Bai restores forestry production after storm No. 3
In the first months of 2025, the spirit of afforestation has spread throughout the localities in the province. With careful preparation of seeds, land funds, human resources, and strong direction from all levels and sectors, afforestation work has had a favorable start, reaching 81.3% of the annual plan, creating a solid foundation for the successful completion of the annual target, towards sustainable forestry development.
During a field trip in early May to the province’s key forest planting areas, we were truly impressed by the lush green of the forests. To create these vast forests, seed preparation plays a key role. By April, the province had produced more than 81.5 million seedlings, of which cinnamon alone accounted for 78.62 million, affirming its position as a key crop.
In addition, tree species such as acacia, pine, po mu, to hap, vối Thuốc and Bát Độ bamboo are also focused on, contributing to biodiversity and improving ecological sustainability. This effort has helped the province's forest coverage rate to remain stable at 63%.
The above results are the crystallization of the consensus and drastic actions of each locality. Luc Yen emerged as a bright spot when completing 102.3% of the annual plan, with a total newly planted area of 2,864.7 hectares, including 2,384.7 hectares of concentrated planted forests. The district has effectively integrated resources from the National Target Program to support the planting of more than 259 hectares of large timber production forests in disadvantaged communes. From the beginning of the year, Yen Binh - Luc Yen Forest Protection Department has proactively assigned staff to stay close to the grassroots, closely coordinating with local authorities to mobilize and guide people to plant forests with the right techniques, at the right time, in line with the goal of developing household economy .
Mr. Ha Tien Cong - Head of Yen Binh - Luc Yen Forest Protection Department, shared: "Since the beginning of the year, we have sent our brothers to stay close to the grassroots, working with the local people to guide people in planting forests systematically. When people see the clear benefits and the enthusiastic support, they will automatically trust and proactively participate. The lush green forests are also thanks to this consensus."
In Van Yen district, the capital of cinnamon trees, the forest planting movement is also taking place strongly. As of early May, the locality has planted 2,864.7 hectares of forest, reaching 102.3% of the annual plan. Not only focusing on area, Van Yen also cares about quality, focusing on developing organic cinnamon material areas. The goal is to increase product value, expand market opportunities, and bring stable and sustainable income to the people.
To achieve these impressive results, the Provincial Forest Protection Department has promptly advised and issued many important directives on forest management, protection, forest fire prevention and control, and forest development. At the same time, the province has promoted the development of the forestry value chain. Currently, 11 chain linkage projects have been implemented according to Decision 510/QD-UBND, focusing on organic cinnamon and Bat Do bamboo shoots in the districts of Tran Yen, Van Yen, Yen Binh, and Luc Yen.
These projects are orienting production towards sustainability and helping farmers access markets more effectively. Forest certification (FSC) and forest environmental service payments have also achieved many positive results. To date, 31,661.8 hectares of forest have been certified (nearly 80% of the plan). The amount of forest environmental service payments by the end of April 2025 reached more than 14.2 billion VND, becoming an important source of encouragement, encouraging people to stick with forest protection and development.
However, in addition to the achieved results, forest development still faces many challenges. Deforestation and forest burning for farming have decreased but still occur in some places. Some enterprises participating in forest certification lack resources, affecting the overall progress. These shortcomings require more drastic participation in direction, inspection and coordination.
In the coming time, the Provincial Forest Protection Department will continue to urge localities to accelerate the progress of forest certification and organic cinnamon certification, while monitoring and supporting the implementation of forestry activities under the National Target Program, ensuring timely disbursement. In particular, the province will strengthen inspection and public announcement of seedling quality standards at nurseries, because quality seedlings are a solid foundation for future forests.
With outstanding results, determination of the entire political system and consensus of the people, Yen Bai is gradually affirming its position as a bright spot in sustainable forestry development. Each hill, each hectare of forest covered with green not only contributes to improving the environment, responding to climate change, but also opens up new economic opportunities, improving the lives of people, especially ethnic minorities in the area.
