Yen Bai builds many resettlement areas for people in disaster areas

Yen Bai province has nearly 7,900 households living in areas at risk of natural disasters, many resettlement areas have been and are being built to stabilize people's lives.

From 2021-2024, Yen Bai province experienced 69 natural disasters, killing 72 people and injuring 50; damaging more than 31,500 houses; damaging more than 12,500 hectares of agricultural and forestry production area; damaging over 900 infrastructure works and causing damage to many other properties...

The areas frequently affected are mainly in the mountainous districts of Mu Cang Chai, Tram Tau, Van Chan and some remote communes of Van Yen, Luc Yen and Tran Yen districts. These areas are often subject to flash floods and landslides due to steep terrain, localized heavy rains and weak soil. In addition, residential areas and constructions located along the Red River, Chay River and streams in the province are also at risk of flooding and landslides when there is prolonged heavy rain.

According to the review data of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, in Yen Bai province, there are nearly 7,900 households living in areas at risk of natural disasters. Of which, over 4,000 households live in areas at risk of landslides; 119 households live in areas at risk of landslides on river banks, streams, and waste tanks; downstream areas of dams; over 630 households in areas at risk of flash floods and over 3,000 households in areas at risk of flooding.

Yen Bai also faces some difficulties due to steep mountainous terrain and currently most of the area is natural forest land, protective forest, so there is a lack of land to build resettlement areas, a lack of production land to stabilize the population for households who have lost their houses and land due to natural disasters and areas at risk of natural disasters; low capital to implement the population resettlement program; mobilization of investment capital outside the state budget and people's participation is still limited.

In recent times, from many central and local sources of capital, Yen Bai province has implemented the construction of resettlement areas, arranging and relocating people to safe places. Specifically, in the period of 2017-2021, 17 projects were implemented in Tram Tau, Van Chan districts and Nghia Lo town to arrange residential land and stabilize the lives of 561 households (nearly 2,750 people) in areas affected or at high risk of being affected by flash floods, landslides and landslides.

In the period of 2021-2023, Yen Bai province has implemented the construction of 3 projects in Yen Binh and Mu Cang Chai districts with a total cost of more than 55 billion VND, stabilizing housing for 50 households (200 people).

In 2024, the province will continue to urgently implement site leveling for 8 projects in Van Chan, Tran Yen, and Yen Binh districts with a total cost of 7.9 billion VND to stabilize the lives of people affected by storm No. 3.

In addition, Yen Bai province has reported to the Government , ministries and central branches to request urgent funding support for the construction of 10 projects to stabilize residents in disaster areas. The implementation period is in 2024 - 2025, with a total investment of about 371 billion VND. After completion, stable and safe accommodation will be arranged for 660 households in Luc Yen, Yen Binh, Van Yen, Van Chan and Mu Cang Chai districts.
