On May 9, news from Military Hospital 175 said that the hospital had just admitted 3 patients, all from District 12, Ho Chi Minh City, suspected of being poisoned by Methanol (industrial alcohol). One of them was so severely poisoned that he did not survive.

According to the patient's family, on the evening of May 1, patients Nguyen Van A. (43 years old) and Nguyen Van Q. (33 years old) and a person named T., all residing in District 12, Ho Chi Minh City, organized a meal at their family's home on the occasion of the holiday.

After 1 day, all 3 people had to be hospitalized at Military Hospital 175 in a state of multiple organ dysfunction, especially severe metabolic acidosis. Despite intensive treatment, patient T. could not survive.

Major, Doctor CK.1 Duong Xuan Minh, Department of Blood Filtration, Military Hospital 175 said that patients A. and Q. were admitted to the emergency room in a state of fatigue, headache, severe vomiting, and visual disturbances.

Blood test results showed that the patients had multiple organ dysfunction and severe metabolic acidosis, while the concentration of Ethanol (food alcohol) in the blood was not high. Combined with the epidemiological factor, all 3 people who drank alcohol had similar symptoms, so we think the cause is due to Methanol poisoning.

Immediately, the hospital held an emergency consultation with experts inside and outside the hospital and determined the diagnosis and carried out active resuscitation interventions such as: blood filtration, blood sugar control, electrolyte control, high dose vitamin B1 administration, ethanol supplementation through the digestive tract...

Currently, the two patients suspected of methanol poisoning are conscious, able to function, and their metabolic acidosis has returned to normal. It is expected that tomorrow, May 10, the two patients will be discharged from the hospital.

According to Dr. Duong Xuan Minh, Methanol, commonly known as industrial alcohol, has many different uses: making paint, solvents... However, this substance is very toxic to the body and is absolutely not used as food alcohol like Ethanol. Alcohol poisoning from Ethanol is usually milder, with only symptoms like drunkenness, but alcohol poisoning from Methanol is often more severe due to industrial alcohol being mixed into drinks.

According to Dr. Minh, people with Methanol poisoning are very dangerous. If not detected and hospitalized in time, the patient will fall into a state of worsening Methanol poisoning such as metabolic acidosis, multiple organ damage leading to death in case of late hospitalization.

"Symptoms of alcohol poisoning containing Methanol usually appear after 1-2 days, including not being able to urinate (prolonged oliguria), prolonged headache, increasing fatigue, lethargy or agitation, loss of alertness, especially signs of visual disturbances that appear very early. People who drink alcohol containing Methanol often see white clouds like mist in front of them... When you notice yourself or those around you showing signs of poisoning after consuming alcohol of unknown origin, take them to the nearest medical facility as soon as possible for timely treatment," Dr. Minh recommends.

On May 9, Military Hospital 175 in collaboration with SingHealth Group (Singapore) organized a continuous training program on hospital quality management on the topic of "patient safety - patient-centered". The program had the participation of 230 students, doctors, nurses, technicians and staff from 35 hospitals, medical facilities and universities inside and outside the military.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Patient safety is a health care principle that emerged as health care systems became increasingly complex and the risk of harm to patients in health care settings increased. Patient safety is about preventing and minimizing risks, errors, and harms that occur to patients during the delivery of health care services. The core principle of patient safety is continuous improvement based on learning from errors and adverse events.

According to WHO, quality health services worldwide must be effective, safe, and people-centered. Furthermore, to achieve quality health care, health services must be timely, equitable, integrated, and efficient.
