13 students hospitalized after drinking free soft drinks in front of school gate

Today, October 1, the Hanoi Food Safety and Hygiene Department informed about the results of the investigation and monitoring of a food safety incident in Thanh Oai District (Hanoi) when 13 students were hospitalized after drinking free soft drinks in front of a construction site.

Previously, at around 3:45 p.m. on September 30, the Hanoi Food Safety and Hygiene Department received information about a food safety incident involving some students of Binh Minh Secondary School (Sinh Qua village, Binh Minh commune, Thanh Oai district, Hanoi), and coordinated with relevant units in the area to investigate and monitor.

According to monitoring, Binh Minh Secondary School has 1,037 students, the school does not organize boarding meals.

At around 1:20 p.m. on September 30, at the school gate, a group of people distributed free soft drinks to students of Binh Minh Secondary School, of which 263 students drank the product.

At 2:30 p.m. the same day, student Nguyen Huu H. (grade 6A, 12 years old) had symptoms of abdominal pain in the navel area and nausea. The school took him to the commune health station, then transferred him to Thanh Oai General Hospital.

By 10 p.m. the same day, Thanh Oai General Hospital had received 12 patients with the same symptoms of headache, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting from Binh Minh Secondary School . These students were diagnosed with food poisoning.

As of this morning, October 1, 13 students (1 grade 6 student, 7 grade 7 students and 5 grade 8 students) are in stable health.

Thanh Oai General Hospital also said that at around 4:30 p.m. on September 30, the hospital's Emergency Room received 13 students from Binh Minh Secondary School suspected of food poisoning after consuming bottled soft drinks distributed for free outside the school gate.

The doctors provided timely emergency care, placed a tube and performed emergency gastric lavage, rehydrated and rebalanced electrolytes, and increased detoxification. By this morning, October 1, the children's health had stabilized.

Hanoi Food Safety Department said that it is expected that at 5:00 p.m. today, the students will be discharged from the hospital and no new patients will be detected.

The department also investigated the related food. By 6:30 p.m. on September 30, the monitoring team had collected 136 unused bottles of free soft drinks. The district's interdisciplinary inspection team sealed them and handed them over to Thanh Oai District Police.

The investigation team also took 2 samples of the above products and sent them to the National Institute for Food Safety and Hygiene for testing, but the test results are not yet available.

Currently, the Hanoi Food Safety and Hygiene Department continues to monitor and supervise the health of students, detect new patients and report according to regulations; promote propaganda to the community and parents of students about the knowledge of using products of unknown origin. When there are signs of suspected use of unsafe food, go to a medical facility immediately for examination.

The Hanoi Food Safety and Hygiene Department will strengthen food safety control in and around school gates in the city.
