At least 81 people were killed and several others were missing after an attack suspected to be carried out by Boko Haram jihadists in Yobe state, northeastern Nigeria, local officials said on September 3.

Yobe state police spokesman Abdulkarim Dungus said about 150 suspected Boko Haram gunmen on more than 50 motorcycles and armed with rifles and grenade launchers attacked the Mafa area on the afternoon of September 1.
Terrorists killed people, burned many shops and houses and so far at least 81 people have died in the attack.
Mr Dungus said it appeared to be a revenge attack “because two Boko Haram terrorists were killed by the village militia”.
Boko Haram and other jihadist groups have waged a 15-year insurgency in northeastern Nigeria that has killed more than 40,000 people. Criminal gangs have raided villages, killing and kidnapping residents, and burned homes after looting in central and northwestern Nigeria.
