2 million new securities accounts opened in 2024

As of the end of December 2024, domestic individual investors had more than 9.2 million accounts. Of these, about 2 million accounts were opened in 2024.

According to data from the Vietnam Securities Depository (VSD), the number of domestic investor accounts increased by nearly 141,000 accounts in December 2024.

Accumulated for the whole year 2024, the number securities account of domestic investors has increased by about 2 million accounts. That means each month there are an average of more than 166,000 new accounts. As of the end of December, domestic individual investors had more than 9.2 million accounts.

Meanwhile, the group foreign investors opened 182 more securities accounts in December 2024. Of which, foreign individual investors opened 162 accounts. Foreign institutional investors opened 20 accounts. In the whole year of 2024, foreign investors opened a total of 2,396 new securities accounts.

By the end of 2024, Vietnam will have a total of nearly 9.3 million securities accounts, an increase of more than 2 million accounts compared to 2023.

Thus, Vietnam's securities market reached the target of 9 million accounts ahead of the 2025 deadline, and actually exceeded this target since the end of October. According to the Government 's project, the market will aim for 11 million accounts by 2030, focusing on developing institutional investors, professional investors and attracting the participation of foreign investors.

In 2025, Vietnam's stock market is likely to be upgraded to a frontier emerging market according to FTSE. This will also contribute to improving capital flows into the domestic market. According to TCSC's calculations, if upgraded to a frontier emerging market in September, the market is expected to receive passive capital flows from 500 million to about 1 billion USD from ETF funds.

Margin incentives to support investors

The number of investors has increased, and the demand for margin loans has also increased. According to statistics at VPBank Securities Company, by the end of the third quarter of 2024, the margin balance reached VND 7,596 billion, an increase of more than VND 500 billion compared to the beginning of the year.

The company said that in the context of a challenging market, the interest rate is also set at a preferential level to support investors, about 8.6% per year for customers opening new accounts - 40 - 60% lower than the common margin interest rate (11.5 - 14.5% per year).

The margin race at securities companies is also attractive in terms of product packages launched on the market.

If in the past, securities companies only needed to provide margin for stocks with high liquidity to reach the margin lending ceiling, now VPBankS is launching many product packages to support investors, including free margin for some T+ transactions.
