Báo Gia đình và Xã hộiBáo Gia đình và Xã hội14/03/2025

For people with high uric acid levels, should they abstain from eating meat? This is a question that many people have. The doctor will clearly answer the question in this article.

People with high uric acid do not have to abstain from meat completely, but need to pay attention to what types of meat they should and should not eat, as well as the appropriate amount and time to eat...

1. How does meat affect the health of people with high uric acid?

The uric acid content in meat is relatively higher than that of vegetables, grains and other foods. Uric acid in the body is closely related to purine, the final metabolite of purine is uric acid, so people often say that foods high in purine should be avoided, but the total amount of purine in the body is not always provided by food.

80% of which is endogenous purine secreted by the body itself and only about 20% is exogenous purine obtained from food. If you are taking medication to treat gout or are not in the acute gout phase, then eating one or two pieces of meat will not affect your health.

People with high uric acid can still eat meat.

High purine content in meat is mostly found in fish, shrimp, crab and animal liver, purine content in poultry and livestock is slightly lower. Therefore, for patients with high purine content can eat livestock meat appropriately and try to avoid fish, shrimp, crab, animal liver. Purine content in fatty meat, pork belly and animal organs in meat is relatively high, so it is best to choose lean meat to eat, such as tender loin, tenderloin without toughness.

The best amount of meat to eat daily is 45-70g, which is about a piece of meat the size of the palm of your hand. For patients with high uric acid, if they do not have an acute gout attack, they can eat a normal amount of meat.

If the uric acid level in the blood is well controlled, eating some poultry and livestock is fine, and you can also eat some seafood with low purine content such as jellyfish and sea cucumber. Some types of fish are foods with average purine content such as mandarin fish, tuna, salmon, sea bass, eel, etc.

The purine content of these fish is around 100 mg/100 g and can be eaten in moderation. Some fish have a medium-high purine content such as cod, swordfish, abalone, crucian carp, purine is around 150 mg/100 g so can be eaten less. Avoid eating fish with a high purine content, such as mullet, pomfret, squid, oysters, saury, sardines, hairtail, whitetail, dried fish, grass shrimp, oysters and clams.

There are also some processed meat foods that should not be eaten, such as bacon, sausages and other products that are too high in salt like ham, meatballs and other meats with added preservatives.

Pay attention to how you cook meat. It is best to use cooking methods such as steaming, boiling, and stewing. Avoid methods that use a lot of oil and high temperatures such as frying, sauteing, and stir-frying.

2. What should people with high uric acid pay attention to when eating and drinking?

Control total calories: Gout patients should maintain or achieve a stable weight, control the total daily calorie intake, the total food intake should be about 10% lower than the normal diet, do not eat too many snacks, do not eat too much or eat too much at each meal.

Low protein diet: Gout patients should provide 0.4 to 0.5 g of protein per kg of body weight, total daily protein intake is controlled at about 40 g, limiting fish and beans appropriately.

Limit fat intake: Gout patients should eat about 50g of total fat per day, pay attention to eating vegetable oil, and limit animal fat intake.

Focus on foods high in carbohydrates: The main ingredient of rice, noodles, and cereals is carbohydrates, so gout patients should focus on these foods in their daily diet to ensure adequate calorie intake.

Avoid drinking alcohol, limit coffee and cocoa: Alcohol can cause gout to attack and make the disease worse. People with gout should absolutely not drink alcohol and should not drink too much coffee or cocoa.

Maintain adequate intake of vitamins B and C: Vitamin B and C are rich in fruits and vegetables. Eating citrus fruits and apples after meals every day, and eating more green leafy vegetables during meals can ensure that the body has enough vitamin B and vitamin C.

Avoid foods high in purine: Foods high in purine include animal organs, fish, shrimp, clams, beef and lamb, peas... Gout patients should eat as little or as little as possible. Gout patients should eat more foods low in purine such as milk, eggs, bread, cucumbers, tomatoes... to reduce the amount of exogenous purine entering the body and lower uric acid levels in the blood.

Although most meats contain purines, the information that patients with high uric acid levels should not eat meat is unrealistic, because meat contains many nutrients necessary for the human body and is difficult to replace with other foods. People with high uric acid levels also need to eat meat appropriately in their daily lives.

Therefore, people with high uric acid levels can generally eat meat, but they must pay attention to controlling the amount, preferably no more than 200g per day. Particularly animal organs and seafood, these two types of meat both have high uric acid levels, patients must strictly follow, should not eat to prevent large amounts of purine from converting into large amounts of uric acid, which will make the condition worse.

3. Refer to 3 types of meat you should eat when you have high uric acid in the blood

People with high uric acid should choose the amount and type of meat suitable for their body.

Lean meat: Although lean meat contains higher purine content, it is much lower than seafood and animal liver. Therefore, people with high uric acid levels can choose to eat reasonable amounts of lean pork, lean beef...

It is worth noting that when eating lean meat, you should avoid eating fatty meat as much as possible, because fatty meat not only makes people gain weight easily, increasing the burden on the body, but also has a higher purine content.

Poultry: Like chicken, duck, goose, this type of meat has less fat, lower cholesterol, eating it does not make the body fat easily, helps reduce the burden on the body, and can also provide a lot of nutrients for the body.

Note, you should not eat poultry skin, because the fat content in poultry skin is relatively high, easily leading to obesity and not beneficial for the stability of uric acid.

Fish: You should eat some common fish such as grass carp, common carp and limit eating sea fish.
