97% of children in Hanoi are vaccinated against measles

Measles is on the rise, with Hanoi recording more than 1,300 cases since the beginning of the year. According to the Capital City Department of Health, vaccination is accelerating, with 97% of children vaccinated against measles.

According to the Hanoi Department of Health , from the beginning of 2025 to now, the city has recorded 1,355 cases of measles, including 1 death in Phu Do, Nam Tu Liem. Patients were recorded in 30/30 districts, towns, in which some units recorded many patients such as: Hoang Mai, Nam Tu Liem, Ha Dong, Thanh Tri, Dong Da, Tay Ho, Hoan Kiem.

Most measles patients are children under 6 years old (60%) and have not been vaccinated or have not received 2 doses of vaccine (91%). Many children with measles admitted to hospital have complications of pneumonia, some have respiratory failure and need oxygen or mechanical ventilation.

The leader of the Hanoi Department of Health said that in the first two months of 2025, most vaccines in the Expanded Immunization Program were fully and promptly supplied. The city has launched a measles vaccination campaign for children aged 6 to under 9 months, with a total of 24,425 children vaccinated as of March 31, reaching 97%. At the same time, the city has carried out catch-up and catch-up vaccinations for more than 6,200 children aged 1-10 who have not received 2 doses of measles-containing vaccines.

Deputy Director of the Hanoi Center for Disease Control (CDC) Khong Minh Tuan also said that measles epidemics are still on the rise and the number of cases may continue to increase in the coming time. Measles patients were recorded in many different age groups, of which: 11% were under 6 months old; 14% were from 6-8 months old; 11% were from 9-11 months old; 23% were from 1-5 years old; 15% were from 6-10 years old and 25% were over 10 years old.

Along with measles, hand, foot and mouth disease has also been on the rise in Hanoi. Since the beginning of the year, the city has had 685 cases, more than double the number in the same period in 2024.

Faced with the complicated developments of the epidemic, districts, towns and cities continue to review and speed up the progress of measles vaccination for children of regular vaccination age and those subject to campaign vaccination, especially children from 6 to under 9 months old and children from 1 to 10 years old who have not received 2 doses of measles vaccine.

To prevent an outbreak, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Health Vu Cao Cuong suggested that districts need to carefully review the subjects in the measles vaccination campaign, ensuring that no children from 6 to under 9 months old and from 1 to 10 years old are left out.

At the same time, strengthen surveillance and detection of measles and hand, foot and mouth disease cases in the community andpreschools with cases and outbreaks. Raise awareness among people and get children of age vaccinated against the disease.
