Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Kha (27 years old) lost from 130 kg to 86 kg after one year of gastric bypass surgery, despite having previously tried many weight loss methods but failed.

A year ago, Mr. Khoa, from Vinh Long , came to Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for a check-up because he was overweight, had difficulty walking, felt tired even with light exercise, and was self-conscious about his figure. He said he had tried many ways (dieting, exercising, taking weight loss pills), and had been to many places to lose weight but had not achieved any results.

Dr. Do Minh Hung, Director of the Center for Endoscopy and Endoscopic Surgery of the Digestive System, examined and evaluated the weight loss methods that Mr. Khoa had previously performed and prescribed laparoscopic tubular gastrectomy (stomach reduction of about 80%).

A week before the surgery, he followed the doctor's diet to let his stomach get used to it. The surgery lasted two hours in June 2022. After the surgery, he was able to walk normally, without pain, and was discharged two days later.

He followed the diet and exercise regimen as directed by his doctor to overcome the problems caused by obesity. Over the past year, he has maintained an hour of exercise every day. The diet reduced the amount of food by 70% compared to before, such as selectively eating nutritional ingredients, using foods rich in protein, green vegetables, fruits, and vitamin supplements; reducing starch and fat to about 10% of the total energy of the meal.

He shared that despite eating less and exercising more, he did not feel tired but on the contrary, he felt excited and happy. Currently, he has lost 44 kg, is more confident with his body shape and needs to lose 10-12 kg to reach his ideal weight.

This is one of many patients who have come to Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for examination and treatment of obesity in recent times. Most of the patients weigh over 100 kg, some weigh nearly 200 kg.

Dr. Minh Hung said that although gastric bypass surgery is highly effective and helps with other diseases, not everyone can do it. Because this is the last resort to treat obesity. Patients are indicated for surgery if they have applied dieting, exercise, and weight loss pills without positive results; have a BMI of 40 or higher or from 35-39.9 and are accompanied by at least one other disease such as high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, bones and joints... Some Asian countries choose BMI of 35, 30 along with considering the disease condition to indicate surgery.

According to doctors, gastric bypass surgery is highly safe with a success rate of about 99.9%. About 10% of patients undergoing surgery experience complications, but most are mild and not life-threatening. Excess weight is resolved at the same time, improving health indicators. Patients also need to choose a reputable obesity treatment unit, combining many specialties for safety and effectiveness.

After surgery, patients need to adjust their lifestyle. Building a balanced diet, combined with exercise helps patients ensure their health and achieve their desired weight.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity rates worldwide have nearly doubled since the 1980s. Today, more than one billion people worldwide are obese, including 650 million adults, 340 million adolescents and 39 million children. A new report from the International Obesity Federation predicts that 51% of the global population, or 4 billion people, will be overweight by 2035.
