Martin Casado from Andreessen Horowitz fund revealed that 80% of American AI startups depend on the Chinese model. DeepSeek is the name that started the revolution when it released its advanced AI model for free in January.
Stanford AI expert Andrew Ng calls it a “Darwinian struggle for survival” between open models. The Design Arena rankings show that the top 16 open-source AI models all come from China.
OpenAI was forced to launch gpt-oss but was criticized for lacking features and not keeping up with Chinese competitors. Meta also changed its strategy, being more cautious about open-sourcing the Llama project. Percy Liang, co-founder of Together AI, said the open-weight model makes it easy to customize and apply in real life.
